Meet Kris Barbara Cumberbatch | Makeup Artist & Beauty Consultant

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kris Barbara Cumberbatch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kris Barbara, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Straight out of high school, my initial plans were to start college and finish with a career in the medical field. During my academic journey, I embarked on a multitude of difficult circumstances. Ultimately I flunked out of college. The opportunities that would lead me to a successful medical career were no longer due to my lack of concentration and dedication to my studies. I was much more focused on money and looking good while hanging out with my friends. I worked part-time with full-time hours at a discount party store. My job was to help indecisive customers decide on a party theme for themselves or loved ones. One of my favorite parts of the job was that I had the opportunity to be a part of their special day and help with tough decisions. Although my role was small in magnitude, it was grand for the moment those people were in my presence. Those joyous moments opened my eyes to a new perspective of being of service to others. At the moment, I knew that I could be more helpful to people celebrating their special day. However, I did not want to help in an event planner type of way. I decided to research some other industries that would help make a celebration more special for the attendees. Makeup artistry stuck out the most in me. The opportunities that I am blessed to be part of are fulfilling. There is just something about a mother seeing her only daughter wear makeup for the first time to her senior prom or the mother-of-the-bride that has not worn makeup since before her daughters were born. For those moments, I am grateful. I pursued an artistic career because being a makeup artist brings joy to my soul. I feel overjoyed for the many people I help discover the art of beauty and the creativeness of makeup.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Project Glamour’s journey has humble beginnings. Kris Barbara, owner and makeup artist has always dreamed of owning her own business. She worked in retail for most of her career and has gained over 15 years of customer service experience. The drive to start an entrepreneurial path occurred while Kris struggled with homelessness. She just wanted to have financial freedom and to leave a legacy to her next generation. Kris worked at a high-end beauty counter, where there she obtained luxury cosmetic and customer service training. To follow her dreams did not come with smooth sailing. There she has been encountered her fair share of obstacles and still is determined to fulfill her goals. Unfortunately, her career at the beauty counter came to an untimely halt. Kris’s love one became ill; she had to become the primary caregiver for them. Through this opportunity, she became closer to her family; the desire to become an entrepreneur was more appealing than ever. Life became more beautiful; things that have once been taking for granted are no longer. Kris believes that you can feel glamourous no matter the circumstances. Being glamourous is a mindset that you can adapt to your beauty path.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To show my best friend a good time in New York City, I would take her to all of the chill places I like to frequent. For one, we could check out ‘The Museum of Natural History. There are always new and exciting exhibits there for a limited time. Plus, all of the everyday exhibits available at your leisure. I like museums because there is always something new to learn. Whether you want to learn more about ancient civilizations, prehistoric animals, or the big bang theory, there is some relevance to our modern existence. After all of the walking around a lot, we can check out the great food the city can offer us. There will be plenty of restaurants and bakeries to visit. The hardest decision will be to choose. I particularly like Mexican food a lot and would not mind exploring all of the different Mexican cuisines with my best friend for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We can explore the abundant coffee shops and grab delectables for the go. There is no lack of bakeries in NYC; we could allow our noses to be the guide to some yummy goodness. Lastly, what’s hanging out with your best friend without hitting up the malls or the infamous 5th avenue with a cold brew in hand?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
With this opportunity, I would like to give a special thanks to the small business owners. Whether we have met in person or on social media, it’s nothing but love. The amount of support and genuine appreciation for my artistic creations is overwhelming. Some days I feel invisible and lack confidence. I have felt like I was not worthy of sharing my voice and that no one cared. In divine timing, I’d receive a random act of encouragement from one of the beautiful souls in my entrepreneur network. For that, many thanks. Shine your light; you never know when someone is struggling to escape the darkness.
