We had the good fortune of connecting with Giselle Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Giselle, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind Vegan Schmegan Bakery, or any restaurant/bakery business’ success, is its customers. Our customers have been extremely supportive of us since before the pandemic; but now with the increasing collective anxiety about our future, when we would think that the support would wax and wane, it has increased ten fold. We are incredibly indebted to our customer base, and we thank them every time we get the chance to because they’re not just helping a 27-year-old female entrepreneur, they’re also helping my team and their families.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am the owner and chief baker of Vegan Schmegan Bakery, a vegan bakery based out of Hialeah. What sets us apart from other bakeries, is that we strive to provide vegan desserts that taste just as good, if not better, than their non-vegan counterparts. We are most proud of our new and improved brioche vegan donuts. The dough is just a dream to work with! It just fries up beautifully, and has a gorgeous spongey interior that is essentially what vegan donut dreams are composed of! Vegan Schmegan has gotten to where it is today through our amazingly supportive customer base. Honestly, we strongly believe that we have the best customers in all of Florida. Although the road hasn’t always been easy for us, the biggest lesson that we have learned is that when you fall, be sure to learn your lesson, pick yourself back up, and continue grinding. What I would want the world to know about Vegan Schmegan is that through constant hard work, success is always around the corner no matter how humble your beginnings are. Continue to believe in yourself and in what you do, the world will soon follow.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
An ideal itinerary that I would give my bestie when she’s in town would be: -Miami Beach (Sun, Good Vibes, Swimming) -L’Artisan (Best vegan croissants, and bon bons. Hands down!) -Vegan Junkie Burgers (Martha, the owner, is truly a culinary visionary! Which is why these burgers are to die for!) -Eat at Sunday (Small food truck, big on flavor and culinary experience. Chris, the owner and chef, is truly gifted!) -The Caribe Vegan (Caribbean Vegan Food Done right!) -Holi Vegan Kitchen (Love, Love, Love, their Tex Mex Bowl!)
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my sous chef Josie. She has been pivotal in the growth of Vegan Schmegan through her her innovative thought process in making our recipes even better than what they were, her quick pace when working with myself during our bake-a-thons, her knowledge in business budgeting, and her relentless work ethic. I don’t think that Vegan Schmegan would be where it is at in terms of organic business growth without her here. And I am incredibly thankful and grateful to have her as both a part of my team and a dear friend.
