We had the good fortune of connecting with Krista Lee Locklin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Krista Lee, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
I think the single most important decision I made that contributed to my success would have to be deciding to finally take my first photography class. I always loved taking photos and for the longest time, my mom kept saying, “you need to get into photography”, “you need to take a photography class”. Well, it turns out my mom was right! It was not easy in the beginning learning everything about exposure, the different styles of photography and how to shoot in manual mode. After a lot of overexposed and underexposed images, and possibly a few tears- I slowly fell in love with my DSLR camera and capturing beautiful images!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My editing style is crisp, vibrant, but natural-toned photos that capture the emotions of the subject. I want my photos to capture a second in time that may have been missed if it weren’t for the click of my shutter. I am most proud of those times during shoots where the client and I get so excited by how the photos are coming out! I love to help my clients feel comfortable in front of the camera and give posing tips throughout my photoshoots. What makes me stand apart is how meticulous I am when it comes to editing. I will never leave a messy or dirty background for a client’s photo. On my Instagram you can see what I am able to remove from photos which includes garbage cans, patchy grass, a family photo where one child isn’t looking, etc! I got to where I am today professionally by diligently learning more about my craft, figuring out my editing style and trying to learn as much as I can about marketing and business along the way. It has not always been easy. I have definitely been overwhelmed by current shoots or anxious about upcoming shoots, but I still showed up every time, and I kept going. I eventually gained more confidence, however I still get anxious sometimes to this day. Some lessons I have learned along the way are to stick to my own rules that I set for my business, don’t be afraid to take risks or try new things, and to also make sure to take breaks! I would love the world to know that I put my heart into my photography sessions and my edits, and I am excited to keep doing what I love!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my bestfriend were visiting the area and I wanted to show them the best time ever, I would of course take them to the beach! I would probably take them to Haulover beach or Fort Lauderdale beach. If they were here for a week, I would also take them on a boat ride with Las Olas Paddleboards in Fort Lauderdale. They have mini powerboats that you can rent to check out the canals in Fort Lauderdale along the intracoastal. I would also make a few stops in South Beach maybe for some food and a photoshoot. Another day we can rent jet skis on Biscayne Bay so they can also see Miami from the water! There’s so many fun events in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, who knows where we will end up!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shoutout to my parents for always being there and encouraging me to follow my dreams! I would also like to thank the Student Affairs department at Nova Southeastern University for allowing me cover many of NSU’s on-campus events while pursuing my Master’s Degree. This allowed me to gain confidence in my photography and also gain experience photographing events and portraits.
