Hi Krista “MK”, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
As a self-employed DJ, risk is a constant part of the journey—it’s something I’ve learned to embrace rather than fear. From the very beginning, deciding to step away from a traditional 9-to-5 job to pursue my passion was a significant risk. There was no guarantee of consistent income or gigs, but I believed in my craft and trusted that my dedication would pay off.

For me, taking risks is about calculated decisions. It’s about stepping outside your comfort zone but doing so with preparation and intention. For example, investing in high-quality equipment early on felt like a gamble when money was tight, but it ultimately elevated my performance and opened doors to bigger opportunities. Similarly, taking the leap to market myself to corporate clients or pitch for high-profile events required confidence in my abilities, even when I wasn’t sure how I’d be received.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My journey to where I am today as a DJ has been anything but easy, but every step has been worth it. It started with a deep love for music and a dream to bring people together through sound. I’ve worked in the radio industry for years, building my skills, networking, and learning the power of storytelling through music. I also invested time into mastering the art of DJing, from mixing to reading a crowd and creating unforgettable experiences.

There were definitely challenges—being a woman in a male-dominated industry often meant having to prove myself twice as hard. I faced moments of doubt, rejection, and times when I felt like giving up. But I overcame those challenges by staying focused on my goals, leaning on the support of my loved ones, and reminding myself why I started. I also sought mentorship from people who inspired me and made it a priority to keep learning and improving. Resilience and consistency were my keys to pushing through.

Believe in yourself, even when others doubt you. You are your greatest advocate.
Always remain a student. The music industry is always evolving, and staying curious and adaptable is crucial.

Stay true to your unique voice. Don’t compromise your vision or identity to fit into someone else’s mold.
Hard work pays off. Talent is important, but work ethic is what sets you apart.
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I want the world to know that my journey is about more than just playing music—it’s about creating a space where people feel seen, heard, and connected. My brand is rooted in authenticity, passion, and empowerment. I’m not just here to entertain; I’m here to inspire and uplift others, especially young women who dream of breaking barriers and creating their own path. My story is proof that you can start small, face challenges, and still create a big impact with passion, persistence, and heart.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was in town for the week, we would definitely start with checking out the gorgeous beaches on South or Hollywood Beach. Cuban Breakfast at Versailles, Little Havana, for Classic Cuban food and strong cafecitos. A cool shopping experience at Lincoln Road checking out the cool boutiques, people watching and some authentic Miami vibes. Definitely scheduling a class at one of my favorite yoga studios in Wynwood and after checking out the Wynwood Art Walls.

Dinner at Swan in the Design District to end the trip on a high note.
