We had the good fortune of connecting with Krystal Tomlinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Krystal, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I spent most of my 20s in corporate PR and Marketing and I had so much fun learning, stretching, building and expanding brands, serving. The better I got at my job the demands on my time became more intense and sometimes unreasonable. I was getting better, doing more and feeling empty. I was forcing myself to see the purpose in my work and I took that as a sign to pull back, reflect and reposition.
Through that process of reflection and conscious decision making I realized that we could do hard work and experience true joy and meaning if we improved our self management skills – managing our energy, our time, our thoughts, our habits. Not changing the world around us but the world within us.
That was the genesis of the Success Farm Life Academy – a company that trains corporate teams and individuals in time management, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution and public speaking, globally.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am most excited about being ranked by Success Magazine on their Success 125 List (2022) of Influential Voices. It is a powerful affirmation of the work I do – helping others to find success, to unmute, unlock and unleash. To be ranked among cultural icons of this generation, authors, athletes and thought leaders who inspire me – Luvvie Ajayi Jones, Will Smith, Tony Robbins – is a tremendous honour. As the only Jamaican on the list, the only person from the Caribbean I am excited to represent the energy, ambition and legacy of the region in this space.
The Success Farm Life Academy has 2000+ students registered in our courses and programmes after 4 years in business. We are where we are today because of our commitment to W.A.T.E.R. the space –
W – Why Power: Helping every student to clarify their purpose
A – Action Advantage: Confronting fear and the inner critic to build a bias for action
T – Training and Certification
E – Evergreen content that offers timeless value to our community
R – Radical Accountability to help our community reduce their excuses and double their discipline
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am from Kingston Jamaica, the cultural capital of the Caribbean but we are bordered by beautiful parishes that offer breathtaking beaches and panorama but the glue…the glue is our PEOPLE. Any visit to the City would include:
– Art walk in Downtown Kingston
– Lunch or Dinner at Port Royal
– A street party or 6 including Early Sundays and Weddy Weddy Wednesdays.
– A natural Spa visit to the neighbouring parish of St. Thomas (Bath Fountain)
– A live reggae show at Skyline Levels with lunch at Kamila’s Kitchen overlooking Kingston City
– A visit to the historic Devon House and Bob Marley Museum
– A visit to Culture Yard in Trench Town, home of Reggae legend Bob Marley
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother – Mischelle Reid – has been a model of excellence for me all my life. I learned from her the value of ownership, personal responsibility. I don’t think I have ever heard my mother complain about someone or something not doing or being what she expected. She has what seems to be a superpower – focusing on what is within her control and doing HER job the best way she can. As a single mother of two children she shouldered without groaning the weight of parenting without my father’s support. She showed me how to treat each moment as if I chose it for myself, the essence of acceptance.
Along my journey I have had any things happen to me that I did not choose but my resilience, my refusal to be broken and distracted by those things was first nourished in my home, watching my mother. I knew, through her, that I would never be powerless, I would never be a victim as long as I maintained control over my thoughts and my actions, no matter the circumstances.
