We had the good fortune of connecting with Kumba Shakur and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kumba, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The inspiration to start the business came to me in meditation. Back in March 2022, l was called to visit Chiapas, Mexico. One day, around the Mountains in San Cristobal de las Casas, l received: take the Mayan culture and share it with the rest of the world – And then Tales if the Wind was born.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work at Tales of the Wind is centered around fostering authenticity and empowering the human mind through travels, discovery of world cultures and healing tools from around the world.

I get called to visit certain places at certain times. Once l get to those places, I immerse myself in the local life, connect with the people and the energy of the land to really understand the culture. In order to accurately depict tales from a specific culture I collaborate with artists, artisans and wisdom keepers. They are the guardians and preservers of cultural and ancestral legacies. From these collaborations l curate collections that I bring back with me to tell tales of that specific culture, land and people. This is way of connecting mind and hearts; opening people up to the rest of the world and creating a sense of oneness in the heart we touch. This work exposes our community to realities that are different from their daily lives; the usual, the safe and familiar. It’s a way of expanding minds and hearts, and allowing our community to connect with deeper parts of themselves.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would start the journey at South pointe park. It is such a beautiful place to visit and enjoy natural scenery. 90% of time you will catch a cruise ship departing. It’s a nice space to swim, enjoy the ocean, meditate and reconnect. The ocean is the perfect environment for me.

I would also take them to the coconut Grove farmers market. It’s the oldest Farmers market in Miami. – A weekly market happening on Saturdays. It offers a curation of vegan and vegetarian foods, holistic wellness products and vendors.

Another must see place is Vizcaya gardens. It takes you in a journey through time and space. One of the most beautiful landmarks in Miami

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shoutout to Maya Azucena –

A dear sister and friend who is a big supporter of Tales of the Wind.
