Meet Laura-Jane Fenney | Performer & Choreographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura-Jane Fenney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura-Jane, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Even as a child, i loved art in all forms, i loved to get lost in books, films, musical theatre, tv – anything that told a story and made me feel deeply. As I got older, I realised that i wanted to be a part of the conversation, i wanted my own stories and make people feel something new and exciting, make them think in a new way or even just give them an escape from reality for a moment. When I started to dance, I realised this was it – dance gave me a vessel to create, to use music and movement to express emotion and communicate with the world, I genuinely could not imagine myself doing anything else.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am extremely proud of my career, spanning across several art forms and continents, it has been a lot of hard work, redirection and knock backs but our industry is a tough one and resilience is key. Looking back I can say I have achieved so many dreams, I danced with The Royal Ballet, performed for Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace, played Sandy on the National Tour of Grease, Roxie Hart in Chicago on Royal Caribbean’s largest cruise ship, was a Principle Artist with Cirque du Soleil. As a creative, I have choreographed for Britain’s Got Talent, the National Diversity Awards, I have directed Aqua Shows for Royal Caribbean with casts from all over the world; , synchronized swimmers, slackliners, aerialists.- it has truly been a dream come true. In the moment, the challenges can feel overwhelming and as a perfectionist, it can feel like I’m not doing enough or I could be pushing myself more, working harder, creating more authentically but I’ve found that it’s important to take a step back sometimes and realise how far I have come. All I have ever wanted to do is create something that inspires a spark in someone else. I am so excited for the future, to continue choreographing and performing as much as I can, I like to set myself huge goals so the next one is Broadway!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh I love so many parts of Miami, I would have to say my favorite district is Wynwood! So much art and culture, so many different types of people and so much to learn and see! The drag brunch at R House is not only a lot of fun but the performers are incredible and so is the food! I also love Lincoln Road for some shopping and a stroll!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe my entire career to my parents, My mum is also a dancer, she trained me before I attended the Royal Ballet School and ingrained the discipline and work ethic that propelled my career. My dad was my biggest supporter, wherever I was performing, he was there in the front row, cheering the loudest and always reminding me how proud he was.
