We had the good fortune of connecting with Lex Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lex, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from the Antelope Valley, a desert outside of LA. I grew up poor, with a ton of siblings and not so good parents. I’ve had to work since I was 15 years old, I took care of my siblings, basically raised a couple of them. I’ve always had to rely on myself, I didn’t have the option of being a kid or a teen just having fun. I’ve always had some sort of responsibility. Being a poor kid means I didn’t get a lot of opportunities, and I’ve learned to take every single opportunity that is given to me. I’ve grown to become grateful for what I have, to not be selfish, to adapt quickly to any situation. My childhood taught me to never settle for less, to not give up, to keep fighting for what you want no matter what. I think my childhood made me a stronger person, slightly traumatized (lol) but strong.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Black Hex is my third business venture. And I’m now working on my fourth, a virtual yoga studio. I believe strongly to be successful you have to be willing to make changes, and quick, if something isn’t working. I’ve made a lot of changes over the years, used my failures as lessons to help me grow. None of it was easy. I’ve made decisions to end businesses I spent years on because they just weren’t working. But I’m so incredibly happy with where I am now. Black Hex has been steadily growing over the last year. I’ve been receiving more custom orders in just the last few months alone. I had been running this business for the last year and a half while going through Yoga Teacher Training, which I just finished last month, and homeschooling my now almost 4th grader. It’s been hectic and crazy, but so incredibly worth it. Everything I’ve created and done, I made happen with nothing but the will to succeed. I have no funding, no investors, I don’t even have parents to support me! Black Hex was literally built with blood, sweat, and tears, and I’m incredibly proud of my tenacity and perseverance.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Personally I’m still not super familiar with the city, I’m very busy literally always so I don’t get out much! But when a friend came to visit me last June, we took them to North Beach a ton, less tourists to have to deal with and we went kayaking at Oleta State Park and it was absolutely an amazing time. I eat mostly vegan food, so I’d probably take them to SoBe Vegan, Pura Vida, but will always love sushi so also Hoshi Sushi and Moshi Moshi. Maybe even a Drag Brunch at the R House in Wynwood!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband is one of my biggest supporters. He supported our family while I started my multiple ventures, he encourages me to keep going when I want to give up. But there’s also my little sibling Max and my friend Cossette, the both of them have been such huge supporters, and honestly without all 3 of them I don’t know where I would be! I’m so grateful for them and their support.
