We had the good fortune of connecting with Lien Cabrera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lien, how do you think about risk?
Risk is innately tied to trust, mostly in one’s own capabilities and intuition. I consider myself to be risk-averse, although, it might not come across that way for others. To give some context, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree that is currently not relevant in the industry that I see myself working in, I left a fairly stable position so that I could pursue a career in social media as well as fashion, and these are highly competitive industries of which I have no prior experience in. I still consider staying at my stable position as the high-risk choice because I knew I would be denying myself the opportunity to pursue something that interests, inspires, and motivates me. Trusting my intuition means being in sync with my inner, most authentic self while also respecting my aspirations by practicing self-compassion, self-discipline, and introspection. What is most challenging oftentimes is not the risk aspect, it is believing that my intuition is leading me to where I am meant to be. That is why the level of risk severity is not as important as my ability to manage risk, and there is no other method of gauging that other than trusting myself. I view taking risks as an essential part of life since it is a direct way of being aligned with my purpose and innermost desires.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an avid consumer of fashion, social media, and entertainment. I just recently decided to focus on fashion, specifically thrifting and upcycling second-hand clothing. Most of the items I style on my Instagram are either thrifted or upcycled by me. I am most excited about, and proud of, my weekly uploading schedule on Instagram where I share daily outfit inspiration and styling advice. Usually, I create stylized short video clips and photos showcasing my own personalized style. I am also on Tiktok where I share the behind-the-scenes of my Instagram, as well as thrifting hauls and the upcycling process. There was always an interest in pursuing something creative in my future, and I am part of the generation where social media has revolutionized the world of entertainment. I followed my interests and dedicated my time to figuring out how to best share those interests with others. Social media is a volatile and unpredictable industry, so I find it best to express yourself organically so that those who are attracted to you are invested in your perspective. With that being said, I once believed that my perspective was not interesting or captivating enough and that could not be further from the truth. In my case, I show that it is possible to have a personalized style while also being sustainable and a conscious consumer.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In this scenario, there are definitely some key spots and areas that I would be excited to check out. For morning coffee and breakfast, there is this cafe by Sunset Drive called Cafe Garden. This place has a cozy Parisian feel that offers inside as well as outside seating, perfect for a morning coffee or a quick lunch. Next on the list is a bookstore called Books and Books, since it is such a relaxing yet fascinating shop to visit due to its varied selection of books in any category and an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. There is also the Fairchild Botanical Garden, which has the most scenic gardens in all of Miami as well as a butterfly conservatory, which is my favorite. For brunch, I would check out Earls Kitchen + Bar in Dadeland or Tap 42 in Coral Gables for the full drink and dining experience. When it comes to nightlife there are a few places that come to mind, but the top 2 are The Wharf and 1-800-Lucky since it has food, drink, and music covered.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to the YouTuber, comedian, and podcast host Nikki Limo for inspiring me to live my most authentic self and to believe in my own potential. I absolutely love her content and would recommend her to anyone who is in need of some valuable life lessons.
