We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsay Zukerberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsay, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Social justice is one of the main reasons we started Zuke’s in the first place. Unfortunately, the “zero waste community” used to be seen as a space only for wealthy white people to show off their expensive, reusable products while excluding the BIPOC who have actually been taking care of this planet since our existence. At Zuke’s we actively reject the notion that you need to have money or high social status to care about the planet. We also reject the idea that started the movement itself- having to fit all of your trash for the year into one jar. Instead, we use our platform to amplify BIPOC voices & promote intersectional environmentalism. We are a part (even if it’s small) of a new age of “zero waste shops” that include EVERYONE. We pride ourselves on being a judgement-free zone where anyone & everyone can help the planet, however that looks for their lifestyle. We also help our local community by co-hosting monthly beach cleanups with a local non-profit organization & we donate to different organizations each month to help people & the planet. We like to think that our little store is helping the world become a better & healthier place, one refill at a time.
What should our readers know about your business?
At Zuke’s Refillery we’re all about sustainable living one step at a time. We’re a judgement-free zone where anyone can come in to try living a little better for the planet & ourselves! We offer plastic-free products for the home & body such as shampoo bars, safety razors, and travel utensils. These items allow us to avoid single-use plastics and reduce our consumption all together. We also have a refillery where you can stock up on cleaning products like laundry detergent & pay by the ounce! You bring a container from home (that’s clean & dry) to fill up however much you need! Not only are the products plastic-free, they’re cruelty, paraben, phthlate, sulfate, and palm oil-free, too! Think of us as a general store, without the waste!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Delray Beach is nice & small so it’s easy to fit a lot of fun into one trip! Since sustainability is always at the forefront of my mind, I also apply that to the businesses I shop from! The first restaurants that come to mind for visitors are Driftwood (in Boynton, but close enough) and Jimmy’s. Both of these spots source ingredients from local farms and local fishermen, which keeps money in our community! I also love Over the Bridge Cafe and Death or Glory because they always have the best food & atmosphere. Silverball Pinball Museum is another must-do for a cheap activity that you can’t find anywhere else! Lastly, taking a Craft Food Tour around town to learn about our local restaurants is an awesome, half-day activity!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many individuals who have helped me get to where I am today. There isn’t one specific person who I can attribute my success to, but many people who played important roles in my life throughout it. I want to thank my parents for raising me in nature & allowing me to watch hours of Animal Planet instead of playing with dolls and videogames. I also want to thank Steve Irwin & Jeff Corwin for fostering a love of animals in me that is unmatched! Lastly, I want to thank the female entrepreneurs in my life who have been inspirations in starting my own sustainability-focused business- Jacqueline Botting & Jessica Pfeffer. All of these people have helped make me into the planet-obsessed business owner I am today, and I am forever grateful to them for it.
