We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa I. Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?

After 20 years in the workforce, I noticed, through all my years working in hospitality & HR, there is a need for management training that not only positively improves morale, production, and growth but also ensures every employee feels supported and walks out of their manager’s office with their dignity intact. Too often, people managers are not provided the resources, knowledge, and real-world experience to handle the many challenges their teams are facing, especially when it comes to managing the people they serve and lead. Therefore, I launched, HBL Resources & my legacy, “The Complete Manager Makeover,” to educate and support all managers of people at every stage of the employee life cycle. Together, my team is on a mission to make an impact by highlighting the importance of ensuring HR practices and managerial skills focus also on supporting and acknowledging the human element of management & leadership.

What should our readers know about your business?
In 1991, at the young age of 22, I entered a career in hospitality. I was bright-eyed, eager to learn, and motivated as I had two small children to care for. I worked to find my footing and as a petite Afro-Latina standing at a humble 4’11, I quickly had to learn to stand tall, lean in, and make sure my voice was heard. Many times, I often felt I had to work twice as hard to be seen and respected. However, as I started to better understand myself, through courses such as D.I.S.C., which I now teach, I was able to lead with authenticity and integrity, which was well-received and increased my confidence in my abilities. It was difficult at times, especially in a male-dominated industry but I preserved and found my way.

Originally launching my own business in 1999 I had to take a step back and fine-tune the entrepreneurial skill set that my career had yet to equip me with. I didn’t take the closing of my 1st business attempt as a failure, but rather as a launching pad to obtain the skills I lacked and go for it again. Eventually, I left a six-figure corporate role to again embark on my own entrepreneurial journey this time with more of the entrepreneurial mindset, knowledge, and skills. Wow! What a leap of faith that was!

In 2011, HBL Resources Inc. was born. HBL stands for “Home, Business, & Life,” because the training, support, and leadership skills we provide positively impact not only individual’s professional lives but their personal lives as well. Our trademarked curriculum, which provides training courses such as D.I.S.C. and Generational Diversity, allows managers, employees, and leaders to better understand the human element of the people they lead and manage. Of course, as an HR leader, I understand the need for Employment Law Compliance and Field Training, however, I saw a need for more mindfulness and care when it came to the relationship between People managers, and the employees they serve, support, and lead. From our inception, our mission has always been to ensure every employee walks out of their manager’s office with their dignity intact.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In a New York native but I sure have found home as a South Florida local for over two decades and would ensure my best friend had an amazing time! Depending on the time of year I’d have to make sure we visited any of the SFL festivals like the Las Olas Art Fair, Coconut Grove Arts Festival, Jazz in the Gardens, SOBE Food & Wine and of course my secret pleasure, the ULTRA Music Festival.  During the days we would browse and buy from the local craft shows to find a plethora of unique finds created by the amazing South Florida craft community and at night we would eat and drink at any number of the great restaurants and bars available right in my backyard at The Shops at Pembroke Gardens, Brimstone is a definite happy hour favorite.  The weekend wouldn’t end without a visit to the Hollywood Broadwalk where we could bask in the sun and listen to whatever local band was playing at the Hollywood Beach Theater Bandshell.  Of course, I couldn’t let them leave without checking out the famous Wynwood Walls & the Perez Art Museum Miami.  Can you tell I love art!!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Ever since I was an 8-year-old girl, growing up in 1970’s Brooklyn, I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur. Watching my father get up before dawn to open his glass shop, Brown’s Glass Shop, created a deep sense of inspiration within me. His dedication and passion to his craft was awe-inspiring and taught me fearlessness, resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity. As my entrepreneurial ambitions grew, he was always there to provide suggestions, advice, and a shoulder to lean on when things got hard. He always believed in me and was always in my corner. Unfortunately, we lost him years ago, but I still feel his spirit, drive and faith deep within me. My greatest hope is that I continue to make him proud as I continue down this path and in the direction of my dreams and purpose
