We had the good fortune of connecting with Lissette Monzon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lissette, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
The most important thing I’ve done as a parent is homeschool my children and include curriculum that is often overlooked in core subjects. I’ve taught them about faith, herbalism, mindfulness, gardening, along with core subjects such as math, language arts, science and social studies.
We’ve studied from the bible to learn about our faith and prayer so they have this foundation to guide them. We study from Buddha Thich Nhat Hanh’s “Planting Seeds: Practicing Mindfulness with Children” in order to practice living in the present moment, meditation, awareness of breath, and so many more tools that I hope they will keep with them throughout their lives for overall well being. We study from a book series called “Herb Fairies” where we learn about medicinal and edible properties of herbs. I want them to know that God provides us with everything we need of Earth. We also grow some of the herbs in our garden. Sometimes they try them, sometimes they don’t, but the seeds are planted and they realize what many people have forgotten. Nature is our food and our medicine. I like for them to wake in the morning and get sunlight in their eyes before they tune into technology.
My husband and I work together to teach them. I think this is the best thing that we can do: provide them with the tools they need to live happy, healthy, balanced lives that will help them navigate the many challenges in this world today
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Lilly Be is all about clean beauty, aromatherapy, and the wellness journey. I formulate my products with synergy for not just skin, but mind and mood. It was after I had my two children that I realized I wanted to stay home with them rather than return to my job as a teacher and not see them most of the day. My husband and I worked it out and decided that I could stay home with the children during the week, then try and sell my products at a farmer’s market on the weekends. I went out with hand written labels, 4 body balms, a table and a tent and started making enough supplemental income to grow my business, take care of my children, and not return to my 9 to 5.
I love my work. I love being able to stay at home with my children, currently homeschooling them as well. My husband and family have all been very supportive of this journey.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would definitely go to the beach to lay on the sand and swim in our beautiful ocean. I also enjoy eating and shopping in Coconut Grove. After that we would probably end up in my garden with some homemade appetizers and hibiscus mimosas.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom has always been my number one fan. She actually bought me my first aromatherapy book and oils when I was 15. I still have that book and refer to it today. The book had facts about aromatherapy throughout history to it’s current use today with DIY recipes for headache, bruises, beauty, and overall wellbeing. This is how I first started blending. There have been lots of other friends, family, and customers who have been incredibly supportive along the way. Indeed, making our way through life includes helping hands and words of encouragement from others and I’m incredibly grateful for each of them.
