We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisyanet Rodriguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisyanet, what matters most to you?
Authenticity and Gratitude are principles I feel deeply connected to. I try every day to live authentically, without pretenses or masks. This means being true to my values, passions, and unique qualities. I hope others may see I’m genuine and transparent in my intentions.
I love how the power of authenticity invites others to be themselves. When we lead by example, we create space for others to feel safe and express their true selves. It can be a ripple effect of openness and acceptance in relationships and the world around us.
Gratitude, in turn, helps me celebrate and honor the things that make me who I am, including the blessings that might otherwise go unnoticed. Encourages me to find beauty and meaning in both the ordinary and extraordinary moments of life. It not only increases happiness but also enhances resilience. I do my best to focus on what I’m learning rather than just what’s lost or difficult. Gratitude helps me build emotional strength and keeps me grounded, even during tough times.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a Cuba-born United States-based Contemporary Visual Artist. I grew up in Cuba, a society with constant economic shortages that trigger families not to accept waste as a living style.
At a very early age, I suffered multiple bone fractures in both arms, which caused long periods of childhood housecare illness and absence from school. My grandmother took charge of my care and early education at home. At the age of five years, I perfectly mastered crochet and hand embroidery techniques, and my grandmother began teaching me to use the sewing machine.
I learned how to sew as a child while making clothes for my dolls. Later, I started making clothes for myself. My grandmother did not use to throw anything away. She had bags full of clothes pieces that we reworked all the time into new clothing for the family and fabric items for the home.
I was never aware of how much of an effect this childhood hobby would have on me until several years later, after graduating in Fine Arts, a time when I was deciding on the aspects that would define my professional artistic work.
Today, I try my art to show devotion to textiles and manual labor, besides my empathy toward physical pain and illness.
I draw imaginary creatures (humans and animals) that are genetically deformed, with diverse bodies combined. They are an illustration of my understanding of actual life degradation due to inappropriate manipulations of technology and industrialization. Nature and life observation are my greatest inspirations as an artist.
Art is an ideal medium to display aspects of life around us, a powerful tool to express certain content to people that is difficult to put forth. Which exalted artistically, could have a better reception by the public.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would dinner in Little Havana and stick around fine art and live music at the eclectically elegant CubaOcho Museum & Performing Arts Center gallery/nightclub. Located on Calle Ocho, CubaOcho’s intimate setting provides the perfect antiques-strewn setting for Cuban jazz, Latin jam sessions, and salsa bands, accompanied by an impressive menu of wines, cocktails, and snacks.
I would also go to Downtown Miami. The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts is the place for first-rate theater and live entertainment. In the heart of Miami, this state-of-the-art venue is home to the Florida Grand Opera and Miami City Ballet, as well as many touring Broadway productions.
Tour the Miami Design District, home to over 130 art galleries, high-end boutiques and restaurants, antique dealers, and showrooms.
Tour of Wynwood Art District and the Wynwood Fashion District with lunch at the Mandolin Aegean Bistro.
Visit of Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. The 17-hectare property boasts one of the most elaborate gardens in the United States, taking influence from European-style gardens created in the 17th and 18th century Italy and France.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family and friends! My world revolves around them.
