Meet Loren Browne

We had the good fortune of connecting with Loren Browne and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Loren, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised in Miami, Florida, but my journey—and the passion that drives me—was shaped by the generations before me. My father is originally from Trinidad and Tobago, and my grandmother’s story is one of resilience and determination. Descended from African slaves and indentured servants from South India, she came to the U.S. in the 1950s as a Caribbean dancer on Broadway. After earning her green card, she brought my father and auntie to join her. Through perseverance and relentless effort, she ascended to become the president of the Transport Workers Union of New York—a groundbreaking achievement for a Black Indian woman in leadership at that time. Fighting against the odds is in my blood.
I was born with spina bifida myelomeningocele—the most severe form of spina bifida—where the spinal cord’s protective covering and nerves protrude in a sac along the lumbar spine. This condition requires immediate surgical intervention to prevent infection, yet doctors believed I wouldn’t survive. My father faced immense challenges in finding a surgeon willing to operate, as most doubted I would make it through the procedure. Eventually, he found one. The surgery was successful, but the surgeon warned that I would be paralyzed from the waist down—possibly even from the neck down—with severe brain damage.
But my father refused to accept that fate. As a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, he began treating me every single day, using every tool at his disposal—massage, acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, and Chinese herbs. While I was a late walker, taking my first steps around age four or five, I walked—something I was never supposed to do. And while doctors predicted severe brain damage, well…I’d like to think I turned out alright!
From an early age, I realized I was different—not just from other children but even from others with spina bifida. While many continued to struggle, I defied expectations. The only difference was the care my father provided—treatment rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Witnessing its transformative power firsthand, I knew I had to learn it.
I began studying under my father early on, and when the time came, I enrolled at the Acupuncture & Massage College—the first university for acupuncture and massage in Florida, founded by my parents. That decision set me on the path of medicine, where I’ve dedicated myself to helping others through the healing power of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Early in my career, I witnessed a troubling reality: many acupuncture physicians catered exclusively to wealthy clientele in predominantly white neighborhoods, charging exorbitant prices that placed their care far out of reach for working-class communities. But for me, medicine was never about wealth—it was about service, about reaching the people who needed it most.
Determined to make a difference, I opened my clinic in a predominantly black and brown working-class neighborhood, bringing traditional Chinese medicine to a community long overlooked. This was before the Affordable Care Act—a time when countless individuals lived without health insurance, forced to go without even the most basic healthcare. My clinic became more than just a medical practice; it became a sanctuary, offering affordable and effective treatments rooted in the wisdom my father passed down to me.
In those early years, I was alone. I answered the phones, treated the patients, swept the floors. Seven days a week, for nearly a decade, I gave everything I had. There were moments when exhaustion nearly broke me, when the weight of the work threatened to pull me under. I wanted to give up more times than I can count—but I didn’t. I kept going.
Today, I am no longer alone. I stand alongside a dedicated team of acupuncture physicians, skilled massage therapists, and the most compassionate front desk team in the world—each person driven by the same purpose: to provide top-quality care at a price people can afford. Together, we’ve built something more than just a clinic. We’ve created a community—a place where heath care is accessible, where every patient is treated with dignity, and where the belief that healthcare should never be a luxury remains at the heart of everything we do. At the Affordable Acupuncture Clinic, we don’t just practice medicine—we stand for something bigger: affordable health care for everyone.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I don’t go out much myself—I’d rather stay home with a good book and cook a meal in my own kitchen. But if I had guests coming to visit, I’d make sure to show them the best of what Florida has to offer. A road trip down to the Keys would be at the top of the list, where they could indulge in incredible seafood, go boating through crystal-clear waters, and snorkel among vibrant marine life.
I’d also take them on a tour of historic Overtown, Wynwood, Midtown, and the Design District—each offering a fascinating look at Miami’s evolution, from its architectural transformations to its thriving business scene. These areas are alive with culture, filled with restaurants, bars, clubs, and an electric nightlife that captures the true essence of the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My success in life is deeply rooted in the unwavering love and wisdom of my father, Dr. Richard Browne. His determination, his mastery of traditional Chinese medicine, and his belief in the impossible gave me the greatest gift—the ability to walk. Through his hands, his teachings, and his boundless spirit, he not only gave me the ability to walk but also ignited a passion within me to follow in his footsteps.
He was more than a teacher; he was my inspiration, a beacon of strength who showed me that the greatest purpose in life is to serve others. Alongside my mother, he shaped me into the man I am today—a man devoted to helping others and to honoring the legacy of those who came before me. My life’s mission is clear: to carry forward their wisdom and dedicate myself to the well-being of others, just as they did for me.
