We had the good fortune of connecting with Lori Royce and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lori, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I thought that when I started my own business I could finally be free to make my own decisions: when I wanted, how I wanted, and how often I needed to. Working for someone else often limits your ability to speak, to grow, to reach new heights or to conquer your own goals. Working for a company that doesn’t share your vision only delays your own path to becoming who you want to be and what you want to do with it all.
I knew I wanted to reach more Clients who are interested in my Art. I knew I wanted to paint what excited me and not what I thought might excite someone else. I knew I wanted to make a dent in changing the way Artists have been taken advantage of in the past and still in the present. I knew I wanted to be in control of my business finances, creativity, sales, marketing and professional development.
Having all of these desires only confirmed what I already knew: That in order for me to make all this happen honestly and organically and to succeed at my own pace, running my own business was really the only option and more importantly the right option for me as a full-time self employed Creative.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My coastal paintings are a window to my world. I crave space, fresh air, a tropical breeze, sunlight and ocean water. Walking along the shoreline of the sea invigorates my soul. My mind is relaxed, my spirit is soaring and my creative juices are overflowing. I breathe easier when I’m on the beach and feel better when I’m on the beach. Capturing that feeling onto canvas with my paints and brushes is the ultimate high for me. When I realize that one of my paintings have also caught the attention of a viewer, this is what means even more to me.
Visually pulling you into one of my acrylic or oil paintings is a genuine compliment on my art; without you having to say anything about it. I can see it on your face, I notice the light in your eyes. I am aware of the moment when you are very quiet and still, yet fully emotionally engaged in that piece of my art.
That is what keeps me going. That is who I am and my story. You are riding along with me. You get it. You understand why I make my art. You sense it and you enjoy it.
It is so exciting that I must announce I have just written my 1st eBOOK!
“How To Keep Your Creative Spirits High When the Money is Low”.
The book outlines My Top 10 Tips for frustrated self employed Artists to keep you motivated through the slow sales months so you don’t give up on your dream of being a full time Artist.
What sets me apart sometimes from many other Artists is that I don’t quit. After being in this business for many years I have learned from my mistakes and my wins. I often get asked my advice from other Artists on how I keep it going. My love to keep creating? Always in my heart. My desire to sell my artwork? Always there. My craving the attention and the Press? I love being interviewed on TV and in Magazines. My joy of painting LIVE in public? Always up for the opportunity. The physical stamina required of me to set up for an exhibit? I just push through it and enjoy the emotional ‘high’ of the installation.
Has it always been easy to run my art business? Not quite!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Two of my best recommendations of Interesting Places to Visit are and just happen to be showcasing my artwork >
Art Basil Italian Restaurant: Stop in to this local favorite hangout in Manalapan on a Friday night. Order some delicious traditional italian food or perhaps a hot pizza fresh from the oven; all while seated at a table underneath a long wall displaying my original seascape paintings. Browse through my collection of artwork for sale and strike up a conversation with the friendly locals at the bar or the diners at the table next to you. You might even get lucky that evening and hear some live music. From 5-7pm watch me paint LIVE at my easel on the outside patio; as I create my newest coastal painting right before your eyes.
218 S. Ocean Blvd, Manalapan, Fl
Yve Hotel Miami: Be sure not to miss out on this bustling touristy hotel. Check out my art on the walls. Come in through the hotel’s front entrance and see my current collection of seascape paintings light up the Lobby! (14) of my original works carefully curated for the Hotel, are decorating the interior space and tagged for sale. Come by during daylight hours when my artwork shows off it’s best colors. Mornings are a good time. Weekdays are best days to get close up to my art. Grab a hearty meal at Biscayne Tavern the hotel’s restaurant, steps away from my paintings.
Breakfasts are wonderful!
146 Biscayne Blvd, Downtown Miami, Fl
After visiting Yve Hotel, head outside on foot and walk through the busy streets of Downtown Miami. The people watching is a show in itself. Lots of excitement in the air. Be sure to also walk across the street to Bayside. Many shops and restaurants and bars in this tropical outdoor waterfront tourist destination. A place you can hang out in for the rest of the afternoon. Then later walk back across the street to Yve Hotel lobby, get your cell phone out and scan the QR code on my signage, pull up my website and purchase your favorite painting of mine through the online shopping cart checkout. I’ll ship the artwork to you. Let my art enhance your life, calm your mind and touch your heart.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Wow!! So many to mention. I’ll just tell you about my favorite few. It really takes many, many people, authors, other Artists, Art Podcasts, Venues & organizations to move along with me as I continue to expand in my art career. Very inspiring and uplifting messages come through loud and clear to me. These experts seem to know how to cheer me on and I have gained an extensive amount of wisdom I was able to put into action in my own business.
-“You Are a Badass at Making Money”- author Jen Sincereo (fantastic book and I devoured it in two days)
-“Making It In The Art World” – author Brainard Carey (excellent advice in this book)
I love listening and watching Martha May Ronson’s many YouTube videos. Martha is an Art Business Strategist and a dynamo in her field. When I need a boost in my day I listen to one of her videos in my car, or while I’m painting or while I’m cooking in my kitchen.
