We had the good fortune of connecting with Luca Parlato and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Luca, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
With every successful business, the most imporant thing is to begin with a vision in mind. This vision HAS to be as clear as possible. In your head, you need to be able to see the vision. What does it look like? What does it feel like? Smell like? Taste like? Sound like? The environment that your business is in, the people that are involved, etc. It needs to be as if you’re playing a memory in your head, THAT clear. Once this masterpiece is painted in your mind, you now have a destination. That’s a huge problem at the start, is knowing exactly where you’re going. After that’s out of the way, observation comes into play. Sometimes people think they know everything and i guarentee if you’re reading this, you’re still in infant your industry, whether you’ve been in it 3 years or 30 years. You don’t know what you don’t know. You need to always be a student. Having the mentality that you’ve figured it out is a losers’ mentality. In reality, no one knows what they’re doing. Even the world leaders don’t know what they’re doing, and you think you think you’re any better? We’re all figuring it out. That’s the human experience. Once you’ve accepted that idea and move forward with curiousity and not complacency, the world is yours and their goldmines or information, people to learn from, and resources to utilize for achieving your vision. Once you’ learn to be a student to life, you also learn what resources to look for in fulfilling your vision. Next, its about searching and gathering those resources. Network, network, network. As a business owner, nothing is going to come to you right away, you need to go out and find the resources, find the tools needed to get to that ‘destination’ we established earlier. Once you have vision, knowledge, and resources, then its time to get funding and let the ship sail.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe that art is suppose to have identity. Uniqueness. It’s easy to mock the best thing happening in the creative space/industry, but what distinguishes my favorite artists from artists I passively listen to, is what they bring to the creative table. That wow factor. I am bringing together the world of RnB and electronic music like it’s never been done before. A new sound, you;ve never heard. Its the moment where you’re shaking hands with your new best friend. Artists who can give 50% of the story, and let the listener find out the other 50% is the perfect way to have identity. For example, when Kendrick Lamar announces an album, we have 50% of the story, we have some idea of what we’re getting, but it’s the other 50% that leaves people at the edge of their seat waiting for a release date. People always want the full story by nature. It’s like when someone is about to tell you something and they then say “actually nevermind”. That’s a recipe for driving someone crazy. But humor aside, longevity rewards the artists who continue to apply that concept. That’s how I approach my art. You know half the story going into it, but there’s an eagerness to know the other half, and when you get it, the wow factor is there. Not every artist approaches their art this way. I am most proud of the project I am currently working on. It’s my greatest work and I’m very excited to bring it in front of the world. As far as challenges go, it’s simple. Believing in that vision you held from the beginning. As long as that vision stays true to you and you know its possible, the rest will fall into place. Everyone has their own definition of God, but having faith in God is essential.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My approach to this would depend on the person. People appreciate different things, and hold close to certain values and lifestyles. Living right outside of Miami, there is a wide variety of lifestyle, culture, interests, etc. that equally thrive across the board. The party nightlife is endless, but the relaxed nightlife is equally as available. Wynwood has always been a favorite spot of mine whether its recording at studio sessions out there, the club scene, and even just walking around and visiting the shops along North Miami Ave. Anywhere you are, there is something waiting to inspire you. Endless murals, sculptues, street art, etc.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Nothing would of been possible without my family. They are, have been, and will always be a backbone to it all. My mom being an immigrant has taught me a lot about the immigrant mentality, holding drive and staying away from comfortability. Opportunity doesn’t come to you, you have to go out and fight for it. I am also a believer that everyone in my life plays an equal role in the game. I always try to learn both postives and negatives from others. People are always so stuck in trying to find role models around them to show them what ‘To Do’ , but there’s very little light on paying attention to others for the reason of learning what ‘Not to Do’. I believe that’s equally as important. Overall, everyone around me plays equal importance to my progress.
