Meet Luciano Cortes | Actor, Director & Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Luciano Cortes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Luciano, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think the risk is like a door opener. When you put yourself at risk you develop tools to overcome that risk and the outcome of that will open a new door of possibilities. It makes you grow. I put myself at risk when I decided to work only in my profession, in what I love. And beyond the scariness, if you’re driven by passion you will always find the way.
I figured out that the only way of doing what I wanted was doing it by myself instead of waiting for a call, so I created a company, opened a theater, write, direct, and perform my shows, and all that takes a lot of risks.
But, because of that risk, here I am being what I wanted to be.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an independent artist, creator, director & actor. When I arrived to this city in 2018, My wife and I created Salvaje. Salvaje is not only the name of my theater company, it’s also an attitude, an aesthetic, a point of view, and all that characterize my work, my language. The wilderness of my pieces, the sense of risk, the surprise, the physical component, the unexpected comedy, the particular use of music and lights are some of the elements that make Salvaje so different from others, something very unseen in this city.
But being different and independent is not easy, being part of the counterculture and not of the mainstream makes it harder when it comes to bringing an audience to the theater, even harder in these modern days. But we don’t bail. The theater is still alive and when people discover it they change forever.
I’ve learned that the key to success is constancy. Stay there, keep in the work, and don’t give up even in the losses. That’s what brought me to where I stand today. In the path of developing a more inclusive language, a theater for everyone, physical and universal so it can blow your mind no matter where you are from.
I would like people to know that I come from a humble family in the interior of Argentina, and if I made my way, anyone with passion and determination can do it too. The world has no limits.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I will definitely take them to coconut grove to have a walk, see the beautiful houses in the historical casket and try some of the amazing gastronomic proposals they have. Morgans at midtown is also a great option, has incredible brunch and I wouldn’t miss them!
Then we can have some beach time which is a must in this paradise city and grab a Cuban sandwich to test the original Miami cousin.
During the night I’d take them to Wynwood to explore the colorful murals and try some Asian food in 1-800 Lucky so we can dance after all in the vibrant outdoor patio with some of the best DJs in the local scene. And Definitely have a theater night at Salvaje Teatro!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When I arrived to Miami I made a new friend that is also an admirable artistic mind, a creative director, and a bold performer. His name is Kevin Cass and he opened with tremendous generosity the doors of theater in this city for me. Since then we create and collaborate together. Thanks, my friend!
