We had the good fortune of connecting with Lynn Biase and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lynn, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I would want people to remember that I lived life to the fullest and was a supporter and true friend to all that knew me. I faced a number of challenges in my life including losing my father and brother within two years of each other, while at the same time I was battling a rare form of aggressive breast cancer. I had two very young children at the time and was working a high stress job on Wall Street. This difficult time in my life made me realize just how precious life is, and how important family and friends are. I left my Wall Street career to spend more time with my family, and soon after began my journey as an Interior Designer. This was one of the best decisions of my life. I prioritize my family, friends and colleagues above everything else as that is what truly matters.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a full service interior designer located in New York and Florida. I take a client specific approach to create beautiful spaces for modern living. I love working closely with my clients to make their design dreams a reality. It is important for me to understand the way a client likes to live, and what they envision for their home. Once I understand this, through my creative design process I turn their visions into reality. While I tend to have a design style, I do not design every house the same. I want each project to reflect the client’s style and way of living. I do, however, love to take a client outside their comfort zone by showing them ideas that they may not have initially imagined, but that I know they will love in the end. I also try to demystify the interior design business by being very transparent with my clients about my process. It is important not only to understand a client’s design vision, but also their expectations, time frame and budget. My background on Wall Street has been invaluable in managing my design business, which requires organization, accuracy and business acumen. I enjoy this part of my job almost as much as the creative process.
Starting my journey in interior design was not easy. It was terrifying to start a new business at the same time I was raising my three young children. However, I overcame those fears by initially working with a few close friends to design their homes. It was such a success that my business took off from there. As my career progressed, so did my confidence. I learned to trust myself and let my experience and instincts guide me. I now walk into a space and within minutes can envision all of the amazing things we can do. Most of my current clients are repeat customers and referrals, which is the best form of flattery. In interior design, you end up becoming very close with your clients. Most projects take many months, even years to complete. You spend so much time together it is so important to trust one another, and have a good relationship. That is how you get the best results. I always say that designing a home should be fun, not stressful. My job is to take much of the stress away from my clients, and help give them the confidence to make decisions that I know will be fabulous in the end!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Miami is one of the most beautiful and culturally enriching places, so entertaining friends is easy. One of my favorite hotels to visit is the Faena. The decor exudes old Hollywood glamour, an era I adore. Damien Hirst’s golden Woolly Mammoth exhibit is reason enough to visit the hotel. After a relaxing day at the beach, we would head to dinner at Casa Tua for one of my favorite Italian meals, and then for drinks at one of the many Miami hotspots. Other places to visit would of course be the Design District to browse some of my favorite design stores, as well as visiting one of the many art galleries. Of course a trip to Miami wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Wynwood, an art lovers paradise, followed by dinner at one of Wynwood’s amazing restaurants.
There are many places to explore outside of Miami as well so we would likely take a few days to visit some of the other beautiful locations in Florida. One of my favorite places is Wellington, which is home to one of the largest equestrian communities in the world. My daughters are both competitive equestrians so we spend a lot of time there. Seeing the beautiful architecture of the many horse barns here is a must. In addition, attending Saturday Night Lights at Wellington International, which showcases a Grand Prix equestrian event each week, is a unique, fun event that everyone enjoys.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It is hard to choose just one person as I have such an amazing support system including of course my amazing husband who encouraged me to follow my dream to start my Interior Design firm. I would also like to give a shout out to the many other people I have met and worked with in the design business including other designers, vendors, photographers, etc. I have found the design business to be such a great, supportive community. These people have been my mentors, colleagues and friends throughout the years. Finally, I couldn’t have done any of this without my amazing clients who put their trust and faith in me every day. I am just so thankful for them.
