We had the good fortune of connecting with Mara and Naza Stessens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mara and Naza, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Different people have different interests in life. Our main interest is wrapped around the whole idea of creating something from scratch and watching our vision grow and provide value to others. We each have had our fair share of mundane jobs; you know the typical 9 to 5. Working for others day in and day out, feeling unaccomplished drove us to take the leap of faith and create our brand. We dove headfirst into the experience and submerged ourselves in our passion. So, to answer your question, the thought process is very simple. We wanted to put in the work where we felt inspired and purposeful. We wanted to create items that promote well-being for our customers while thinking about our carbon footprint. We try to be resourceful. We love working in what we do now, which is creating handmade aroma shop products for home and well-being. We have bonded over the fact that we can count on each other, being our own boss’ in a company that we know will benefit and help others. And that is exactly why our passion does not feel like work but as something that we truly enjoy doing.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We are two sisters with a passion for nature, purity, self-love, and aromatherapy. We came together to create products that can provide our customers with a peace of mind that the ingredients used won’t harm one’s health. We feel that having control of what kind of chemicals we put on our bodies, or our surroundings can make significant difference. We started gypsophila with the intention of creating things we loved. Our goal was to feel that our products would make a difference for our customers and benefit their well-being. We take into consideration the good of the planet by minimizing the use of plastic and by using recycled materials. We create with passion and love, and we hope that every product that they try gives them that energy.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
With a year-round tropical climate, the time is always right for so many of the fun things to do in South Florida. Beach days, museum visits, cultural experiences, and outdoor adventures – you name it, South Florida has it. We would definitely take our friends around to show them a good time! No trip to this part of the world would be complete without going to South Beach or any beach along the A1A Coastline. Being very into nature and the environment we would also take trips through the Everglades; hiking on trails, airboat rides, and enjoying the Florida wildlife. We would roam through the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens while taking beautiful pictures. Another place we recommend is the Yellow Green Farmers Market in Hollywood. This place is our home away from home since this is where our store is located. With that being said, we know all the best restaurants at Yellow Green! We would have lunch eating amazing homemade Italian pasta or sip on natural fruit juices. Dinner would have a special reservation at Graziano’s Restaurant on Bird Rd. representing our Argentine roots. Another wonderful restaurant to visit would be Ponte Vecchio Ristorante e Pizzeria in Coral Gables, they serve the best grilled octopus and brick oven pizza.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge just how grateful we are for all of our supporters! Giving a huge shout out to our family, especially our husbands. Thank you for both for always encouraging us to pursue our passions. Thank you for allowing our crazy experiment to take over our whole garage area… and then slowly engulf the entire first floor of our home. Thank you both for putting your handy skills to the test in assembling our beautiful product displays and helping decorate the shop.
