We had the good fortune of connecting with Marlene Montano and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marlene, how do you think about risk?
I’m all for taking risks in life. I believe that the greatest opportunities often come from stepping out of your comfort zone. In my early 30s, I took a leap of faith and decided to become a tattoo artist, even though it was a big change. Looking back, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’m incredibly grateful to my friends, family, and partner who supported and encouraged me to take this risk and follow my passion.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been drawing since before I could walk—art has always been a huge part of my life, especially realism art. At 22, I felt ready to pursue my dream of becoming a tattoo artist, so I went to apply for the exam. But when I got there, the place was closed due to a holiday. I took it as a sign that it wasn’t my time, and honestly, it discouraged me from trying again. But when I turned 31, I decided to go for it once more. Passing that exam and receiving my tattoo license was the best feeling ever. I did it for my younger self, to prove that no matter where you are in life, you can achieve whatever you set your mind to.
What sets me apart is the deep passion I have for realism in my art. It’s something that’s been with me since childhood, and it’s what drives me every day. The journey hasn’t been easy, but every challenge has taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and believing in myself. I want the world to know that it’s never too late to follow your dreams, and that determination and passion can take you far, no matter where you start.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m not much of a planner; I love the spontaneity of just going where the wind takes us. If my best friend was visiting, we’d probably spend the week trying out different cool spots as we discover them. I’m definitely a foodie, so wherever there’s good food and drinks, that’s where you’ll find us! Whether it’s a hidden gem of a restaurant, a quirky café, or a lively bar with great vibes, we’d be there, enjoying whatever the day brings. The best adventures are often the ones you don’t plan lol
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to my mom, Maribel Montano. She’s always been a pillar of strength and bravery in my life. No matter the challenges she faced, she never gave up on my brother and me. Her resilience and unwavering support empowered me to be strong and brave, just like her. I admire her so much for that. I love you mom and I want you to know how special you are to kevin and myself.
I also want to give a big shoutout to my partner, Allen Moran. From day one, he’s been by my side, supporting me in every way possible. Allen helped me build my studio and has offered his input on so many aspects of my journey. On those days when I’m not feeling as confident, he’s always there to lift me up and remind me of my worth. I’m incredibly grateful to have that kind of unwavering support from him.
I also want to give a huge shoutout to my friend and boss, Maria Barca. Her support has been invaluable in getting me to where I am today. Maria has guided me through the business side of things and was instrumental in helping me with my first studio. She’s always been incredibly supportive, and I appreciate her in every way. Maria is a hard-working woman, a dedicated mom, and a true mentor. I’m so grateful to have her in my life.
