We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Perkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind creating my own business was the need to physically manifest my dreams. I work really well with deadlines and responsibilities, and having a business where you have to fulfill certain requirement works wonderfully for me. I wanted to take my art to the next level, and I want it to grow into a full-time career, so taking this step was something necessary for my dreams to come forth.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art takes huge inspiration from the different ways one can transform themselves into something completely different. I think my love for this duality of the human face and body originally stems from watching too much Hannah Montana growing up. But, nonetheless, I truly have fallen in love with the action of transformation. Now, the reason I am using the terminology of “transformation” and not “drag” specifically, is because I enjoy all sorts of transformation whether it is a play on gender or not. Much of my art stems from wanting to be a crystallized alien creature that was born in the sunken city of Atlantis and has risen to interact with the current day humans. So, this type of transformation does not necessarily play with male or female, but also the idea of something being “genderless”. The reason I like to enforce this idea is that I want the audience to appreciate the art itself without the associations that come with genders. I think something that puts me apart from others in my field would be my originality and how detail-oriented I am with my creations. I have a video game background, so my love for story telling is always trying to come through with each character that I create.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So, the little town I live in is not the best place to take someone on a trip. If it were up to me to create a trip with an itinerary, 2 hours of the trip would be driving away from the town I live in. I would probably take someone to the Shenandoah mountains on a huge hike. There is such beautiful scenery up in the mountains and is a really great place for peace and serenity.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would really like to shoutout to my family. If it is not for them, much of what I do currently would not be possible, or yet it would be coming at a much slower pace. They are extremely supportive of what I do and have a large part in the business aspect of my business. So, I would like to use this platform to shoutout them out and give them the applause they truly deserve!
