We had the good fortune of connecting with Max Strang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Max, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
In life… pursuing new interests and hobbies makes me happy. I don’t consider myself an expert in any of those pursuits but there is real joy in trying new things. For me, it’s been scuba diving, hiking, flying sailplanes or playing tennis. But the most rewarding of all is spending time with my family and watching the kids grow up.

In business… the same applies regarding the pursuit of new projects. While it’s always great to see a project completed successfully… it’s the creative excitement for the next project on the horizon that keeps me going.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was fortunate to have been raised in a unique modern home. It was this amazing assemblage of precast concrete and glass with a landscaped courtyard at its center. I was contemplating space and structure and light and shadow and circulation in a very different way from a very young age. That experience undoubtedly set me on a path to become an architect. So, I worked hard and earned degrees from the University of Florida and Columbia University. After a few short internships I launched my own firm in Miami at the age of twenty-six.
Since then, the firm has grown and evolved considerably. We’ve operated as a team of about fifty people during the past several years. What sets us apart is our commitment to the creative process and our ability to deliver striking designs in complex environments.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d actually say let’s jump on a small plane and fly to the “out-islands” of the Bahamas. South Florida is SO CLOSE to one of the most amazing places on our planet. Event the flight over there is sublime. Makers Air flies direct from Fort Lauderdale to Stella Maris, Long Island and you can skip the big airports. This is a destination that brings you closer to nature. We can kayak tidal rivers, explore reefs and wrecks, jump into the natural wonder of Deans Blue Hole… or just do nothing but soak in the drinks and Bahamian vibe. My family has a beach house there (Rock Hill) and get over there whenever we can.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to the entire team at Strang.. Most people have a skewed perspective about the role of an individual architect… but our success has been fueled by the tremendous talents and efforts of many people. They are deserving of so much credit as we convert creative thoughts and ideas into space and structure.
