We had the good fortune of connecting with Meagan Mederos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meagan, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think the biggest factor behind the growing success of my business is knowing my “why”. I didn’t start my photography business because of money, or because I thought it was easy. I love serving people–making them feel valued and confident. At the end of the day, it’s not about me or what my clients can do for me, but what I can do for them. As a business owner, I believe once you take the focus off you, you’ll start to see real growth.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Artistically speaking, I strive for my work to be intentional and authentic. And I believe that starts way before I ever pick up my camera. I make an effort to make every person who messages me on Instagram or sends me an email feel like they’re talking to a real person, and not another robotic vendor. People today want a personal experience where they feel valued, and I try to give that to all my clients. It wasn’t easy coming to this conclusion. I had to get really specific with who I want to work with, what their needs are and how I can help them. After figuring that out, everything else became a bit clearer. I get to work with amazing people who trust me and my work. I am so excited for the next 5, 10, 25 years in this business and the path it will lead me to.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is such a loaded question, especially being from Miami–there’s so much to do! First thing’s first, you’ve gotta try Miami food; I’m talking croquettas, café, frijoles, maduros, churrasco, flan. My favorite place that reminds me a lot of the food I grew up is Mi Abuelita’s Kitchen! Of course you have to visit the beaches; my fav hotspots tend to be Hollywood, Bill Baggs or South Pointe (but only on the weekdays to avoid the crowd!) For daytime activities, I love going out on the boat to Haulover or kayaking in Oleta. I’m more of a homebody, but if you want some nightlife, Wynwood or Downtown Miami is where it’s at!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As cheesy as it may sound, I have to give all credit to my God. At the end of the day, He deserves all the glory and is the real reason why I do what I do. A couple other honorable mentions are my parents and siblings who have supported my entrepreneurship endeavors, as well as my boyfriend who constantly encourages me to push on even when I don’t believe in myself. As well as my photo work parents, Dani and Pablo from Colors of Grace. They have taken me under their wing and have just been pouring into me. I don’t know where I’d be without them.
