We had the good fortune of connecting with Austin Bergman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Austin, looking back, what do you think was the most difficult decision you’ve had to make?
At a very young age I knew I was gay, going against my gut I married a girl, started and amazing. company with her. Life went on and as I was building that white pickett fence I just knew inside someday this would all come to an end. As the business got more and more successful it was harder to say or do anything about it, we have two amazing daughters Aveda 13 and Arden 10 and raising them when I was there was an absolute blast. The older and older I got, the harder and harder it was for me to hold in my feelings towards men, I loved my wife but Austin needed to be Austin. I feared loosing my life, my job, my income, my kids, pretty much everything I had ever done in my life, but the need to be me was stronger than ever. In 2016 I came out to her, we cried for weeks on what we were going to do, our relationship from that point on never was the same. Without me knowing it she had the company appraised, all my real estate holdings appraised and in October of 2017 I was hit with divorce papers and an agreement that pretty much fired me from the company I started with her and stripped me from all my possessions. Yes it sucked, but I got the opportunity to hit the reset button on my own terms. I relocated to South Florida in December of 2018 and I never looked back. I can be the authentic me and live a true fulfilled life. My average price range was 350k in RVA today its 2.0M. If you are going through something and in your gut you know that there is a better way, risk it all because sometimes its greener on the other side.

What should our readers know about your business?
I have been in real estate my entire working career I have seen and done it all, from removing dead bodies on closing day, to being kicked out of a home at a listing appointment when the other spouse came home and had no clue the husband wanted to sell pre-divorce.

I know how to market homes local, nationally and around the globe. The majority of my clients are the upper tier to society and purchase multi million dollar properties so you better have your shit together before you do business with them.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love the little gay island I live on called Wilton Manors, the arts, the clubs, the history and the restaurants are all amazing. Its a little special place for me. I also think it needs more attention, not many people know about it. its not in Miami but its about 20 min north.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wrote a book about all of this www.TheRealStateOfLife.com and if you you want to know my X wife deserves a shoutout, from the beginnings she knew I was gay but just fought it off, we talked about it all the time. She knew I loved her but as I stated the older I got the harder it was to hold it all in. I would reference the book in my case, anyone going through this or any area of their life that needs help its up to YOU to fix it.
