We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always envisioned a life for myself that surpasses any realities that I’ve had as a child, a life that is limitless, a life that is joyful. After leaving the Air Force 3 years ago, I started to find a new freedom, but I would have never imagined that becoming a full-time entrepreneur was in the plan.

I’ve always wanted to buy a home for myself and begin to build wealth for myself and my future family, but I knew nothing about Real Estate so I figured what better way to learn about the process then becoming a Realtor.

So, I took the course, passed the exam and all of a sudden my life began to change more than I ever could’ve expected. All my life I worked for someone else and craved security. I always feared being an entrepreneur because I told myself I’d fail and it wasn’t secure, but I soon realized that inner voice and those beliefs were previous agreements that were either passed down or that I made to myself a long time ago that no longer applied.

I was in a transitional period in my life, preparing to graduate with my BS in Health Administration from FAU and preparing for a new position in healthcare administration at the WPB Community Health Center, a position I was so excited about because I’ve always been passionate about serving others. Well, that position I was so excited about, it ended up not working out after i had already given notice to my previous job. So I told myself, maybe this is God telling me there’s something more for me, a different avenue, maybe now that I got my RE license, this is what i was supposed to pursue, and looking back I think I was just trying to convince myself.

There were many moments of uncertainty or fear. I cried every morning for the next month, because I was so used to having a plan and knowing what was next, but in this period of my life louder than ever I heard God say, trust me, because he had something bigger and more grand in store, something that would make all my dreams come true. Little did I know that in order to make my dreams a reality, I would have to create that reality for many other families. Starting my own business, helped me tap into my true calling, helping others, in any capacity I can. I thought I needed to stick to one thing, the practical thing, the safe thing, but working for myself I feel safer than Ive ever felt because I get to bet on myself everyday. I get to assist, educate, and make the dream of homeownership a reality for some many others while providing excellent service, work ethic, and my dedication. My thought process for starting my own business was rooted in my craving for autonomy and creating a life for myself that surpassed my imagination, but now I feel it’s my duty to serve my community and be an inspiration to my siblings, veterans, and anyone else scared to make the next step.  Now, I have three of my own businesses and don’t see me ever working for anyone else. Starting my own business led to my own personal freedom.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am a South Florida Realtor and Co-owner of Divine Wall Murals. What sets me apart from the rest is that I’m not in this to just make as much money as I can, money has never been a motivating factor to me, it’s about my passion for people. I find true fulfillment in being able to help others and truly impact lives. I believe as long as every choice I make is with good intention, then I can never fail. I get excited the more I learn ,because then I’m able to share more with others in regards to the Real estate market and how we can leverage it to benefit our community. With both of my businesses, they’re rooted in making the community better. In regards to Real Estate, I want to help as many minorities become homeowners as I can, my goal is to advocate, educate, and elevate. I believe there can never be enough resources to help my community, and it only takes one person to make a difference and share those important resources. I plan to partner with local community organizations promoting financial literacy and promote the reality that homeownership and wealth building is attainable for everyone, period. In regards to Divine Wall Murals, there is an entire artistic community that needs and wants to be fostered and we’re all about spreading art throughout our community, building community, and beautifying where we live.

The decision to even start my own businesses wasn’t easy, but after I got passed any self limiting beliefs and really started to tap into my life being my own to create nothing could stop me and everything became a lesson that helped me grow. What I’ve learned most about being an entrepreneur is that 1) you have to believe in yourself (mindset is key) and push past your comfort 2) you have to go at your own pace and never compare yourself and 3) discipline and consistency is key (no matter the motivation). I want the world to know that success looks different for every single person and every one has a story, but it’s the reality you make after that story and the choices that you make every day that really counts.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Flying into the West Palm Beach Airport, I’d stop by TheSquare for a bite, Clematis for nightlife, For drinks the speakeasy Four or ER Bradleys for people watching and views of the intracoastal.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shoutout the love of my life, my future husband, and the Co-owner of my business Divine Wall Murals –JR Jones Jr. We have been partners in life and business for almost 10 years and I wouldn’t feel right showing credit to anyone else first. We met in 2012, made it through 4 years of military life and long distance, and now we’re thriving as serial entrepreneurs. We are creating a life that our ancestors would be proud of and where our future family will be set up and I’m so excited and grateful to be able to share this life and our successes together.
