We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Perlman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melissa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started BlueIvy Communications in May 2011 after working in the Office Depot corporate communications office for seven years. Before that, I developed my writing skills reporting for local TV, radio and newspapers after graduating from Brown University with a degree in Expository Writing. My reason? I started BlueIvy Communications because I wanted to support small- and medium-sized businesses by building their respective brand images and simultaneously securing positive media exposure for them. I love the process of working with a business and helping them show the community (and sometimes world) what they are doing, how they are special, and why they are relevant. There is a great deal of pride felt when seeing yourself or your company in a magazine, newspaper, online or on TV, and I love providing this to my clients. It never gets old for me. By starting BlueIvy Communications, I have been able to do exactly that for nearly 10 years now!

What should our readers know about your business?
BlueIvy Communications is a full-service public relations and communications firm based in Delray Beach, Florida. We are boutique in size, which means I personally interact and work with every single client on our roster. BlueIvy employs a team of seasoned writers and professionals with decades of experience, who develop newsletters, websites, speeches, case studies, media relations, along with social media management, photography and videography. We work with clients from all over the world in a range of industries, including medical, legal, retail, technology, start-up, non-profit, fitness, restaurant, and more. Since day one of starting BlueIvy Communications, I have always been committed to delivering the best results to our clients, and I am proud to say our reputation to this day reflects that. What separates BlueIvy Communications from the competition? We are really good at what we do, and we try really hard! Our team is made up of writers from Brown University, New York University and Tufts University – which means our clients benefit from the best creative, professional and technical writers around! And our contacts and relationships with both the community and the media are second-to-none!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live and work in Delray Beach and I absolutely love it! I’d recommend starting your day in East Delray Beach (near downtown) with a run or walk along A1A. We would of course first stop in at my favorite running store Fleet Feet Delray Beach to pick up any last minute items – running shoes, socks, a visor, water bottle, and some nutrition. After our run, we would take a dip in the ocean and then stop for some breakfast and coffee on Atlantic Avenue. There are a multitude of coffee shops and delicious cafes to choose from! Atlantic Avenue is also where we’d probably go shopping during the day, visit the Delray Beach Tennis Stadium (where they hold the Delray Beach Open) for some tennis, and grab a quick lunch – sitting out on the sidewalk to people watch as well. Finally, evening would be dinner at some of my favorite spots: Brûlé Bistro or Papa’s Tapas, all in Pineapple Grove. After dinner, we’d walk around at Old School Square in the center of Delray Beach to see what the city had happening. Right now, the 100-foot Christmas Tree is up and soon to be lit, but at other times during the year, we have Dining in the Square, Concerts, and the Green Market on Sunday! Delray Beach is just fantastic year-round!!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I first started BlueIvy Communications, I depended heavily on my family and close friends to refer business my way. It was the only way to build a following and a reputation that has carried me through to today. My dad, Russell Perlman, my brother Michael Perlman and my sister Lindsay Leventhal, all stepped up on my behalf to introduce their friends with businesses, neighbors in need of communications strategy, and more. Fast forward to late 2016 when I met my now boyfriend, Mark Burns, he immediately became my biggest referral source – sharing contacts and recommending me to friends and colleagues in his various circles. Now nearly five years later, Mark is the Chief Operating Officer at BlueIvy Communications and continues to help keep the machine running and growing! I couldn’t be more thankful for his constant support, energy and enthusiasm for BlueIvy!
