We had the good fortune of connecting with Melvin Cotton III and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melvin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind the creation of my production company “CTK & Affiliates” was I wanted to create inspiring content that entertains. Everything that I produce has purpose. Whether in film, music or digital content made for television; my goal is to encourage people and promote the love of Jesus Christ. I want my viewers/listeners to walk away with more than laughs and a good time, but also have gained something that will aid them on there life journey.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a film producer and music artist who creates content that inspires and entertains audiences. There are three pillars of my company: (Impact, Empower & Legacy) “Making an Impact, Empowering people & leaving a Legacy”. Music is the soundtrack too our lives. In every situation we experience in our lives, there is a theme song of some sort we can associate to that moment. Even if its just to past time or if we want to feel good in that moment, music has always held a place in our hearts and has a strong connection to our emotions. Film has always allowed us to dream. Dreaming beyond where we are in life and then aspire to attain that dream. My goal was/is to combine the two creating a bridge and pathway in an effort to inspire people to go after that dream, grow spiritually and display the love of Jesus in every production. This has been a journey for me; when I first entered the business, there wasn’t a visible market for the type of content I create. Over time, I’ve experienced many No’s and closed doors, which at the time was very discouraging. However I learned and grew from those experiences, because of those No’s it forced me to learn all the skill sets I needed to create, write, produce, film and record my own content. I became a one stop shop for entertainment production. The skills I’ve learned in script writing, film and recording arts are things that I can never loss, and the time I took to perfect my craft enhanced me professionally. I love what I do, and it brings me joy having the ability to encourage others through my creativity. I hope that when people view my shows and listen to my music; you are encouraged, inspired and entertained with every piece of work.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a quit person that doesn’t like chains so I’d take my friend to: Winter Park for some good food then to the art district for some outdoor entertainment (local music concerts and food trucks and outdoor movies) Throughout the city there are a few locations which has entertainment on display so we would attend a new location each day. Locations: Winter Park, Lake Nona, Downtown, Winter Garden, Lake Mary
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is dedicated to my wife: Melissa Cotton & my son LeMel (Melvin Cotton IV); my family who has supported me and close friends. I’d also like to give a special thanks to a book that has been very inspirational to me “The Hollywood Commandments” by Devon Franklin.
