We had the good fortune of connecting with Gizella Manzano and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gizella, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work life balance… is that a real thing? Just kidding. When I first started my business I always put work over everything. I said yes yes yes to everything even though I was exhausted. I never said no because what is this one time I said no could have been a lost opportunity. Then came mom life…. put that into the mix and my priorities completely shifted. I didn’t want to miss out on moments with my son. He put my life into balance and made me appreciate the little things.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We all started somewhere. My somewhere and love for makeup came from dance. As you know stage makeup is a big part of a dancer’s life. I always knew I liked doing makeup but never really knew I could actually make a career out of it. I went on to graduate from UCF with my bachelors, held the typical 9-5pm but always did makeup on the side. Then in 2011 I had the opportunity to make it my actual job by working with MAC Cosmetics (whom I still work with a few days a week now) and never looked back. It was a big risk for me because I had to prove to my family that being a makeup artist was just as financially stable as working a “normal” job. I eventually became a manager and my freelance makeup wedding business started booming. It was a lot of work and eventually in 2017 I was able to fully support myself from freelancing only. The biggest risk I took was worth it!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I always love Fort Lauderdale! Would spend the weekend at the W have brunch over at TAP 42 go to the infamous Blondies by the beach and get some sun and finish up by having dinner at Steak 954
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think every single experience and person has shaped me one way or another and guided me on my path to success. My parents for raising me to always believe in myself, my husband for supporting my career, my sister for always being my biggest fan, and now my son for being my biggest motivation to always be the best version of my self.
