We had the good fortune of connecting with Mey Lynn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mey, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Creative types have this feeling, this need to build, craft, design and bring something incredible to life. It’s exciting, fun, and sets the soul on fire! Creative careers can be very fulfilling, you just have to find the medium that resonates the most with you. For me that’s clothing. Historical, vintage, costume, trending, it’s all exciting. As a Fashion/ Costume Designer and Content Creator, it brings me joy to see my designs on stage and on others. I love connecting with people through styling and sharing the sewing or design process. The way a garment can change your mood, your confidence, tell a story and help with self expression, is amazing. Even at times when I did not have a creative job, at night or on the weekends, I always found a way to keep creating. Not only are you constantly learning new things and gaining experience but you can also satisfy that need to create.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a Designer and Content Creator, what sets me apart, is my background in Costume Design for Theater, Dance, and Television. I have the skillset to work collaboratively, to make a garment go from material to final product, and to create designs that are over the top and exciting. Every time I finish a project I am so proud of it but the most exciting moments come from a client or partnership that lets me be as creative as possible and think outside the box. For example, the fundraiser, Trash 2 Trends in Orlando where we could only make garments out of recycled objects. I made some wild dresses for that! Life has different seasons so it’s important to go with the flow and be flexible. Have a great work ethic and a great personality and doors will open. Take the opportunities that are presented to you, gain experience, meet new people and create beautiful things.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly it truly depends on my guests personality and interests but my personal favorites spots are:
Breakfast: Chef Sucre Cafe, Knaus Berry Farm if it’s in season, or a cuban pastelito bakery!
Lunch or Dinner: Whisk and Ichimi Ramen are favorites!
Outdoor Activities: Oleta River Park for kayaking, Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden, Vizcaya, Perez Art Museum and the Deering Estate.
Beach (obviously it’s own category): to see the beach go to South Pointe Park, Nikki Beach, then get ice cream but to swim I’d go up north a bit near the Fountainebleau for less crowds and equally beautiful water.
At Night: Wynwood + a pizza at Gramps and Mango’s Tropical Cafe for fun. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In developing the person I am today, my family has been extremely supportive but a special shoutout goes to my mom for encouraging my creativity and going as far as modeling my designs on a runway. That takes guts! My husband is my rock, and #1 cheerleader. He has been supportive since day one! My designs would just be clothes on a hanger if it wasn’t for his talent in capturing them beautifully. For mentorship, the design professors at UCF Theater taught me the foundation of design. Once you understand the basics and importance of collaboration, you can apply it to your career and doors will open!
