Meet Michelle Fu

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Fu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, can you tell us about a book that has had a meaningful impact on you?
I’ve always had a habit of romanticizing life. I’ve never really outgrown that part of myself—seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. That lens has shaped the way I see the world, and it’s also why The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer means so much to me. This book has become an extension of myself as I grow older; it’s more than just a book, it’s a piece of who I am—a reminder that childlike wonder isn’t something we have to grow out and the belief that there’s beauty in seeing the world with a bit of magic.
I first read The Land of Stories as a kid, and ever since, I’ve taken it with me everywhere I go—a piece of my childhood that I’ve carried with me. Even now, when I revisit it, I’m transported back to that same sense of excitement and innocence I felt when I read it for the first time. I’m thankful to find literature that reminds me of the importance of imagination. While some might dismiss it as a simple read, to me, that’s part of what makes it special. Sometimes the most meaningful life lessons come from stories that seem the most playful on the surface. So, thank you Chris Colfer, for letting me grow up and learn from these characters.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Something I learned early on in my painting days is to enjoy the process, not to focus on the end product. Naturally, as humans, we all wish for the final outcome rather than taking our time with the details. But as time’s gone on, I’ve learned to trust my own pace and to stay rooted in why I create over anything else. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that authenticity matters. When you stay true to your voice and vision, people will connect with it more deeply.
For me, my art is rooted in storytelling, not just visually, but emotionally. Everything I create comes from a very personal place, though you might not be able to tell as the audience. I want my work to be a little reminder that softness and exploration still belong in this world, no matter how fast or harsh life can feel. My hope is that when people see my art, they feel comforted and reminded of simple magic that exists in everyday life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a local in Miami, Florida, my ideal itinerary to share with others would consist of a morning stroll in Coconut Grove to Panther coffee (matcha and almond croissant). The afternoon would be perfect time for a beach day at Crandon Beach, or some shopping at Magic City Flea on Sundays. At night, Casa Neos for a waterside dinner is the perfect end to the day.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My friends and my dad have always been my biggest supporters. They believed in me and lifted me up until I believed in me too, there’s nothing I can do to repay that kindness. My friends have always been my biggest supporters and celebrate my wins, no matter how big or small. Their constant love, laughter, and perspective have kept me inspired. And my dad has been my rock. He always believed in me, pushing me to be my best, and showing me what it means to work hard and stay true to yourself. I’m incredibly grateful for parties, because their support has played a huge role in who I am today and all I’ve accomplished.
