We had the good fortune of connecting with Miriam Soler Ramos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Miriam Soler, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“Ships don’t sink because of the water around them; ships sink because of the water that gets in them. Don’t let what’s happening around you get inside you and weigh you down.” I love this quote for two reasons: First, I believe it to be resoundingly true. Second, the way it frames adversity is an effective reminder, particularly in those moments when life feels overwhelming.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Government. I have the privilege of serving at the City Attorney for the City of Coral Gables, a City known for its history, tree canopy, fine dining, and so much more. As City Attorney I am the City’s Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel, leading an office of 5 attorneys, including myself. My legal career has been focused on public service. My first position out of law school was as an Assistant State Attorney in Miami-Dade County which provided me with invaluable trial experience and the privilege of representing the State of Florida and standing up for crime victims. My next position was with the Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust. My time there allowed me to enforce important ethics rules and help foster an increase in the trust the public has toward government. The COE also allowed me to learn about local government law which ultimately resulted in my current position. My career journey so far has taught me two great lessons. One, there is immense value and reward in using a legal degree to help others. Two, one has to be open to opportunities when they present themselves.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This County has wonderful places to visit. I would certainly take my best friend to Miami Beach to enjoy not only the sand and sun but also to experience the Art Deco district and outdoor dining on Lincoln Road, Another must is Vizcaya Museum and Gardens as well as the Deering Estate. Of course, we would visit Wynwood and experience its eclectic and artsy feel as well as trendy restaurants and bars. I would also take my best friend boating in order for her to experience the beauty of Biscayne Bay, the Miami River, and the breathtaking view of the Miami skyline from the water. I would take her to visit the Everglades, the Perez Art Museum, and the Philip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science. Lastly and importantly, I would bring best friend to the City Beautiful and have her enjoy the wonderful restaurants that Coral Gables has to offer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Ozzy Ramos.
