We had the good fortune of connecting with Mirtha Ojeda Petit and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mirtha Ojeda, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Due to the 2020 pandemic, many parents found themselves with their children at home. Some enrolled in virtual classes, while others did not. These parents were who encouraged me to start my business, Mirope Teaching Services. My thoughts were to provide support to those families during uncertain times and to facilitate meaningful learning experiences in their homes.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
After a major change in my life, I started working at a preschool 26 years ago. After that I went to work with fashion designers as a sample maker, then when back to work at a preschool. At that particular preschool, the T.E.A.C.H. program was offering scholarships to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. I accepted the scholarship and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education/Child Development. Later on I received a Master of Science in Early Childhood Education from Florida International University. It wasn’t an easy journey for many reasons: English is not my primary language, I was working full time and attending FIU full time, I was 45 years old, etc. Some lessons I learned include putting my trust in God (With Him all things are possible), remain committed, and set my priorities in order. One of the most important things I learned is that when opportunities present themselves, one most be ready to grab them and do the best according to our abilities.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to the beautiful Viscaya Museum and Gardens, Deering Estate, I would take them to the beaches, especially Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. Another place worth visiting is the Spanish Monastery. We would go to Sak Pase Haitian Restaurant, Monimbo Nicaraguan fritanga, and POC restaurant buffet in Coral Gables.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many people who supported me through my career, but most of all I would like to thank my son Rafael Eduardo, my daughter Mildred. They have been my biggest support, also my friend, Jean Petit.
