We had the good fortune of connecting with Misty Burton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Misty, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I learned too much about human trafficking. I know that may seem like a crazy answer, but it is the honest truth. At the time I was learning a lot about it through a volunteer organization I was working with and I had a friend who was heavily involved in awareness. I asked a leader on the state task force in SC what was needed at the time and her answer to me was really simple- awareness. She wanted people to know that this was happening here, in the states, in their own towns- right now. It was not an issue of “there.” I decided that I could use Tenfold to raise awareness.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a teacher by training. I taught school and then worked with teachers for 10 years before starting Tenfold so this is a definite career change. I have no formal business training. At first, I thought that was going to be a huge disadvantage, but the longer I’m in business the less I believe that to be true. I think I am more apt to try things because I have no preconceived notions of how they are supposed to go. Perhaps it gives me the freedom to be flexible. I love this quote by Jeff Bezos, “be stubborn on vision, flexible on details.” That describes me (and Tenfold) perfectly.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh my goodness what a fun question! We live in an amazing city- so many fun things to see and do~ I would definitely take them to Soda City Market on a Saturday. It’s a market on Main Street for small makers and food vendors every Saturday. It’s such an eclectic mix of people and small businesses. It embodies the heart of this city to me and I always leave there happy.
For a fun daytime activity, I’d probably suggest we take in a Fireflies game! That is our local Minor League Baseball team. We have a great ballpark here and the atmosphere is always super fun and family-friendly.
For a fun night out I would suggest we head back to Main St Columbia and hit a few of my favorites. Hendrix rooftop for drinks and Bourbon for small bites!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
None of this would be possible without our customers. When Tenfold started we had one product. One. Some of them have been with us since the very beginning and have watched us grow and evolve into what we are today. Now we partner with brands and artisans from all over the world. We have blossomed into more than I ever thought possible. I know it’s because of their loyalty and their free marketing efforts! My shoutout will always be for our customers because without them we would not exist!!
