We had the good fortune of connecting with Moy Covalin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Moy, how does your business help the community?

“Diversity is the one true thing we have in common. Celebrate it every day.” -Anonymous.
Over twelve years ago I started Ethnofit, a joyful world-dance workout experience that has become an ambassador to diversity, multiculturalism and unity in times where intolerance and hatred speech seem to persist. I’ve always believed that the arts, such as music and dance, have the power to bring people together, they allow us to connect within and with others in a deeper way. Ethnofit creates a space for people to enjoy the beauty and power of ethnic-inspired choreographies from countries around the globe, getting to experience different rhythms and cultures through our bodies and pores; a different way of knowing, one that transcends beliefs and ways of thinking. “Cultural diversity helps us recognize and respect “ways of being” that are not necessarily our own, so that as we interact with others we can build bridges to trust, respect, and understanding across cultures..” Dr. Lisa D. Belfield In March 2020, COVID pandemic forced us to close our in-person classes and brought the opportunity to reinvent ourselves: the first day we needed to stay home Ethnofit TV did its first live stream. It opened the possibility to connect with people from all over the world and expand our message online, dancing and spreading Ethnofit values to everyone. This TV Platform has accelerated our mission and helped to share good vibes around the globe. Ethnofit TV among other things, promotes a healthier lifestyle, an approachable dance world that doesn’t require castings, focusing more on the experience over the technique, allowing to grow and improve in a natural progression, that brings joy and elation impacting everyday life, building a more unified and healthier global community celebrating diversity.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a music lover with a BA in Architecture, specialized in Stage Design and Choreography for over 23 years. I’m passionate about matters of the body in space or about the space where the body moves, always creating and bringing transformative experiences to people as a passive or interactive audience through movement, music, classes and multidisciplinary performances.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m originally from Mexico City and moved last year to Vancouver BC, Every time a friend has come to visit to any of those cities I always had great things to do around and places to eat. I will recommend here one of my favourite spots in each city to eat. Mexico City: There is this amazing accesible “comfort food” place named ENO, owned by Enrique Olvera, one of the top Mexican Chefs (Pujol) where you can eat great Mexican food with a contemporary twist. The quality of the ingredients is to be recognized, my favourite dish is the simple but great: “Quesadilla con epazote y flor de calabaza” Vancouver: Whenever I was doing scouting to move to Vancouver, I was searching for something special, and it sure is: Medina Cafe in Downtown, serves amazing breakfast and lunch with a moroccan influence, but my favourite thing here is the “Waffles with Pistachio and Rosewater sauce.”

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to recognize the love and support of every person that has made Ethnofit grow since its beginnings, opening doors, through their trust, passion for dancing, spreading the word, being open to new ways. This Shoutout goes to Ethnofit dancers of all times.
