We had the good fortune of connecting with Myke Celis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Myke, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe that authenticity played a huge role in my brand’s success. Being able to love myself whole and embrace myself fully allowed me to inspire others to do the same. #bestmeever is all about becoming your authentic, unapologetic, grandest version of yourself. And you can only do that if you are able to live life and express yourself minus any form of filter or pretension. It’s all about tapping on your real self’s power from within. Easier said than done though because it takes a whole lot of courage, humility and self worth to show yourself and the rest of the world who you really are and what you’re meant to be. But here’s the thing: when you come from a space of authenticity, you would never be caught off guard, whatever the rest of the world throws at you because you know (and understand and accept) yourself fully.. And that makes you (and your brand), unstoppable.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
There is always something beautiful that will emerge from a bad experience. That’s one thing I always tell myself and others. Because truth be told, my brand, #bestmeever emerged from such. Growing up, I have always known that I was a Unicorn. Quite different from others. But during that time, other people had a hard time accepting that. I grew up being physically and verbally bashed by my own parents for not wanting to conform to the norm at a very young age, as I adored Unicorns and Wonder Woman was my childhood heroine. In school, I lost count of the name calling and bullying simply because I didn’t fit the u everyone had for me. So I went about living in my own bubble and made use of success as my protective walls. I excelled in school and even at work there after, coming from grit, wanting to prove myself in the process so I would get the validation I have always wanted and longed for. At the age of 33 I reached my peak: I had my own advertising company, handling multinational and local brands, earning millions, in a relationship with a perfect partner at a glance. I was successful. Yes. But I was also feeling empty. Because I knew deep inside, it wasn’t exactly what I wanted. And the Universe has it’s way of showing me just that. Because that time, my friend of 15 years whom I hired for my company betrayed me for money and left me almost bankrupt. And my seemingly perfect boyfriend then was actually physically abusive. And those life changing events broke down my walls of success and left me feeling lost and vulnerable. I remember having to weigh my options then because I reached the lowest point in my life: to overdose myself with pills or slash my wrist. But there’s this little voice within, my Unicorn self which I have set aside for the longest time, that called out to me and said: what if you just start all over again? Nothing to lose. And I am so glad I did. I picked myself up and allowed myself to heal and grow in the process by posting the positive learnings I got from my experiences on Facebook, using #bestyearever , simply because my goal then was just to make it through the year. Slowly people started resonating with my daily posts and engagements grew and before I knew it by the end of the years, I had raving fans and loyal followers. On December 31 though I had a predicament: what will be my hashtag for next year? I thought long and hard about this and realized that maybe it wasn’t about the time frame, it wasn’t about what happened to me and whatever people did. It was all about me, my choices and how I was able to move on and forward from what broke me by being my best. And that gave birth to #bestmeever . Which led to the brand that you see right now across multi-media platforms as a global coaching program as I embraced my true calling of becoming a Global Master Coach, as an international best selling book series, as the heart and soul of my multiple TEDx talks and the core of all my speaking, hosting and coaching engagements. All my life, I have been trying to fit in the mould the world had for me. But when I broke free and decided to be my own #bestmeever , I owned my space. And the whole world, adjusted accordingly. I am now #unicorning all over the world and teaching others to do the same.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If they were visiting me in Manila, and let’s say the travel ban has been lifted accordingly, I would take them to the following: A day trip to Tagaytay, to see the Taal Volcano and sample local Filipino cuisines there. 3 days in Boracay to enjoy one of the world’s finest beaches while doing sunrise and sunset walks and drinks. 2 days at The Farm at San Benito, Batangas to meditate, detox, eat healthy vegetarian meals and have some coaching sessions in between in an idyllic paradise. And 1 day to go shopping at the SM Mall of Asia for souvenirs they can bring home, while having side trips to neighboring areas like Binondo for a food crawl and Intramuros for a cultural experience. Oh my, this got me excited! I can actually be a tour guide!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my success to my Mom and Aunt Virgie. They have been my constant source of support, inspiration and unconditional love, all through out my journey towards becoming the Global Master Coach that I am now. I’d also like to give thanks to all my friends, followers, readers, listeners, viewers and brands who have continuously rallied for me and believed in my work and my purpose. It means a lot being loved and supported by my own tribe who shares the same values as I do. And lastly, to my great man up there, God, for all the wonderful blessings and great new doors of opportunities that allow me to move on and forward and change lives of people globally, one day at a time.
