We had the good fortune of connecting with Mystix Mercury and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mystix, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I was an only child and the first and only African-American grand-daughter to my cuban grandparents. There weren’t any other children around and I had to figure out ways to entertain myself and playing with dirt can only entertain for so long. I was very inventive, creative and colorful as a child, no prodigy, just someone who loved to curiously create. From repurposing my old jeans into birthday cards, singing made up songs and real ones and drawing on whatever I could possibly touch.

This enthusiasm transcended into my grade school and once I graduated I knew I was going to focus on art or music. I focused on both in different ways and ultimately dropped out of uni and pursued a freelance career as an artist.

I use the skill set that I prepared for my endeavors as a way to help others and supplement my income, instead of going the 9-5 route.

I pursued an artistic career because, art is me, I can’t live without creating in my own way and I decided to dedicate myself, my life and soul to it, throughout my whole life it has called to me like a whisper in my ear until I dedicated myself to it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Art is a special thing for me, it’s more than just expression its a moment I materialize from my inner essence to share.. sometimes with a select few, sometimes for a period of time, or sometimes to the world.

I don’t think about what sets me apart from others any more, I think about what I want to make next….
How does the world I live in make me feel….
How do I want to feel…..
These things are so much more important and interesting then worrying about being unique compared to the next dude in line.

Right now I want to feel happy, light, airy, free to go anywhere with paid gigs waiting at my door.

I try to keep the innocence of the creation process in my music and art as a inspiration to create.

I’m really proud about my recent performance at one of the biggest festivals of the year here in Miami, III Points Festival.
I plan to continue breaking the boundaries of my own limitations, imagining bigger and better opportunities in the future.

I wish I could say it was a walk in the park to get to the point I am now, but it wasn’t. It requires, time, dedication, love for your passion, patience, belief and so much more. It’s so easy to be discouraged by a negative experience. It’s so easy to fall down, when gravity is pulling us into the ground. Getting up, is another thing entirely and having the resilience to do it over and over again while spotting the mistakes is key to getting to a goal.

There were many times I doubted myself and wanted to quit. The way I overcame was my love for music and art, my determination to make something of myself. When a door closed, I looked for another to open. My imagination is the only thing stopping me from creating new opportunities and once I realize that in any situation I feel instantly free.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It’s really easy to see where I like to go! As an artist I document all my outings and share them with my fans on my instagram.

First we will buy some fruit and hang out at a nature trail in the middle of Miami. I’ll bring some sound healing instruments and I will do a sound healing session after breakfast.

Then we will go to downtown Miami and check out whats going on in the city! As a native Miamian I love walking in the city so much.

After we’ve walked a bit we will drive over to Technique Records, my fave record store hopefully they have open decks so I can jump on the turntables and share some obscure tunes.

After Technique we will stop at Gramps, get some Pizza Tropical and check out the Synth event where I would obviously be performing at with my instruments.

Late night tip, we can go to key biscayne and watch the waves.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout the life support that guided me in the right direction, mapped a blueprint I could follow in my own way and continues to guide and inspire me to break boundaries as an artist and musician.

Traumatize is a Cuban Born Bilingual Rapper, Producer, Engineer, Motivational Speaker, Mentor and so much more.

Although I was already a musician and artist before meeting Traumatize, without him I don’t know how I would have evolved and seen music and art as more than just a dream. Traumatize saw the potential in me and inspired me to start my solo career as a musician, Traumatize named and inspired me to create my brand Vintage Cruis’n USA from my love of Thrifting and Vintage.

Traumatize saw my creations and was able to help map a trajectory for me to follow as an artist, to get paid from my art, music and presence. He showed me that you can take your music from writing lyrics in a trap house in Coconut Grove Miami, Fl to a sold out show at Grand Central, Downtown Miami headlining Bone Thugs & 3 Six Mafia.

Traumatize taught me that you can make your dreams happen with the right map and motivation. I deeply admire his intellect, knowledge and insight.

I definitely suggest him as a mentor to those that want to take their dreams seriously and get to the level of making it a reality.
