We had the good fortune of connecting with Nana Velez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nana, how does your business help the community?
Honora Tu Luz (Honor Your Light) was born out of my own healing journey. After becoming a mother, I began experiencing fainting spells and panic attacks that were initially thought to be strokes. Medically, there was “nothing wrong,” but emotionally and mentally, I was carrying years of trauma, abuse, anxiety, guilt, and PTSD. Therapy and medication helped me manage, but I knew deep inside I didn’t want my children to inherit the same patterns of pain.

When I moved to Miami, a friend gifted me my first Reiki session and that moment changed everything. For the first time in years, I felt release, clarity, and a reconnection to myself. From there, I explored different healing modalities like Reiki, ThetaHealing, pendulum work, Kundalini Activation, EMDR, hypnotherapy, and each one helped me face my shadows and embrace the light within.

Through that journey, I realized that what I had been searching for in the world, love, approval, courage, safety, was already inside of me. By reconnecting with my true self, I was able to honor my own light, and I remembered my purpose: to help others do the same.

Today, I am a Reiki teacher and a facilitator of Pendulum healing, ThetaHealing, Sound Healing, and Vital Energy Activation (Kundalini Activation), sharing the very tools that supported me in my darkest times.

That is the social impact of my work. With Honora Tu Luz, I offer people a safe space to face their darkness, heal from trauma, and reconnect with their inner power. Every client who learns to heal themselves creates a ripple effect bringing more compassion, balance, and light into their families, their communities, and ultimately, the world. Healing ourselves is how we help heal the collective and have inner peace.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve had the privilege of building my career around my deepest passion: music. Music has always been more than just notes on a page it has been my outlet for creativity, my way of expressing empathy, and my faithful companion through life’s challenges.

My journey began as a flute player in my high school band. Music was the only subject that truly inspired me, and I dreamed of studying flute at Berklee College of Music. At the time, my family didn’t have the financial means to support this dream, and my instrument was in poor condition. It felt impossible. But my band teacher encouraged me to never give up. With his guidance, I practiced for countless hours with determination and discipline.

When Berklee announced a one-week workshop in Puerto Rico, my teacher pushed me to audition. I was terrified and convinced that others were better than me, but I took the leap and to my shock, I was accepted. After the program, I received a scholarship to pursue a bachelor’s degree at Berklee College of Music. A girl from Puerto Rico with limited resources had made her dream a reality.

That moment changed everything. I went on to complete my bachelor’s degree at Berklee and later earned a Presidential Scholarship for a Master’s Degree in Music Education at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. These achievements opened doors for me to become a music professor, perform as first flute with the Banda de Conciertos de Puerto Rico, and direct programs that brought music education to underserved communities. Today, I also work at a foundation that provides scholarships for talented young musicians, giving back to the world what the world gave me.

At this stage in my career, I’ve expanded my work by integrating music into my healing practice, Honra Tu Luz. For me, music is not background it is a sacred tool for transformation. Whether through singing bowls, tuning forks, drums, mantras, or healing frequencies, sound helps release stagnant energy, calm the nervous system, open the chakras, and reconnect us with our inner harmony. Music speaks directly to the soul, bypassing the mind and going straight to the heart. In every session, I use music intentionally to deepen the healing process and elevate the frequency of those I work with.
Of course, the journey has not been easy. As a woman in the music industry, I’ve faced obstacles that at times felt discouraging. Yet these challenges gave me the fire to keep going, to work harder, and to prove to myself that I could rise above. Today, I see them as lessons that shaped me into the woman I am, resilient, compassionate, and aligned with my purpose.

What sets me apart is that I use music and energy healing to my purpose by helping others honor their light. My story is proof that no dream is too big, and that even the darkest challenges can transform into the brightest paths forward.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I could not be where I am today without the love, guidance, and support of so many beautiful souls along my journey. First and foremost, I want to recognize my husband for his unconditional support, and my children, because of them I made the decision to take control of my life and truly heal myself.

I am deeply grateful to my therapists who guided me through the most difficult moments, and to my spiritual teachers who shared their wisdom and opened new doors for me.

A heartfelt thanks to my dad, aunt and sister for always being there for me, and to my soul sisters and friends whose unconditional love has been a constant light in my healing journey. To the ducks at my pond, for keeping me company and making me smile.

I also want to honor my clients; they are my mirrors. I learn just as much from them as they learn from me, and every session teaches me more about healing, compassion, and honoring our shared light.

A big shoutout to Weird Village and Cut and Destroy, for their creativity, vision, support, and for encouraging me to step out of my shell and fully embrace my light.

I would also love to recognize the books that deeply supported and transformed my healing journey: Living Untethered by Michael Singer, The Empath’s Survival Guide by Judith Orloff, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F&#$ by Mark Manson, Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda, A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle, A Course In Miracles by The Foundation For Inner Peace, and Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend. Each of them offered wisdom that helped me shift perspectives, heal, and grow.

Above all, I give thanks to God and the Universe for guiding me, for giving me strength in the darkest moments, and for always leading me back to my purpose, to help others honor their light.
