We had the good fortune of connecting with Nandy Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nandy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
One Shades of Brown, Inc started with the purpose to bring unity in the African American community. Learning about colorism, a practice of discrimination by which those with lighter skin are treated more favorably than those with darker skin. This practice is a product of racism in the United States, in that it upholds the white standards of beauty and benefits white people in the institutions of oppression. Colorism within the black community has been a serious emotional and psychological battle. One Shades of Brown is a non-profit organization (movement) that celebrates all shades of brown. Our motto is ONE Fight, One Mission, One Family!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The thing that sets One Shades of Brown, Inc movement apart from other organizations is our mission. We truly believe in the saying “united we stand, divided we fall,” that is true for the black community. The OSOB movement is very active in the community. We have protested over the killing of black people, we have held empowerment workshops for students in our community, we have hosted and participated in numerous back-to-school drives. We don’t do it for recognition, we do it because we have a responsibility to uplift, empower, educate, and serve the black community.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wynwood has become the go to place to visit in Miami. Of course, Miami Beach will always be a main attraction for tourists visiting Miami. Downtown Brickell is also a hot spot in the city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One Shades of Brown, Inc is a family (OSOB family) organization. It was built from the ground up with the help of so many individuals. I want to especially shout out Islande Smith-Theoc, Patricia Smith, Patricia Walters, Alfred Smith, PD Vision photographer, and all of the amazing individuals who supported us from the very beginning. The OSOB movement is successful because of people in the community who believe in our mission. #osobfamily
