We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalia Barlow and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Natalia, how do you think about risk?
To take a risk in my eyes is to follow your inner knowing with confidence that regardless of what happens, it will be for the ultimate good. So far, so good.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
July 2021 will make 10 years of being a creative in the beauty space and to say it has been a journey of in-depth self reflection outwardly expressed is an understatement. To be an artist is to connect with your canvas whatever it may be and in a way, I become the brush stroke that blended the eyeshadow. I wish I could say connecting with my canvases came easy to me, but it did not. Whether it was a trauma I hadn’t yet experienced, a lifestyle I once thought I could never live or a perspective I was not yet prepared for… initially I found it difficult to find common ground. Did the artistry fail at times? Not outwardly to the eye accustomed to seeing makeup as a superficial mask that guards the soul. Somehow we got lost along the way thinking the chiseled blend of a cheekbone mattered more than how a certain eyeshadow blend showed you a glimmer of their warm spirit. The many conversations with my canvases at different stages of their lives have broadened my perspective of the world and myself. Does it make me a better artist? Yes, but ultimately, I am thankful it makes me a better human.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In one day we may go to lunch at Meat Market and then walk barefoot in the sand at Cypress Point Park. Bar Taco and Olivia are great places for dinners out with Ciccio Cali, Wright’s Deli and Curry Leaves being perfect spots to grab dinner to eat at home. I recently provided the Glow for a photoshoot at Philippe Park and foresee much of the time exploring there as well.
