We had the good fortune of connecting with Sofia Karam and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sofia, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
I would say that one thing that outsiders are probably unaware of is that there’s a lot of “competition.” Its not exactly easy working in the entertainment industry because everyone wants the same thing. You need to work hard, and be dedicated. You need to show up for castings, be yourself, stand out, and continue working. I love being in front of the camera, but I also love the behind the scenes! Which is why I decided to get my Bachelors degree in Broadcast and Emerging Media. It allows me to know everything about being in front of the camera and behind a camera. I’ve been told plenty of times to quit. But, I had to remind myself that I can do anything I set my mind to. You can be anything you want to be. As long as you believe in yourself and work hard.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Around 5 years ago, my boyfriend Sam took me with him to one of his castings. We had plans to go to dinner after since we went around 5pm. He needed to do the audition with someone, and since nobody else was there, the casting director asked me to step in just so he can do his part. A few days later, Sam got a call from his agent letting him know that WE got the callback, and that the director loved our chemistry for this specific commercial. I was extremely nervous and hesitant, but Sam gave me the push that I needed. That was the beginning of my story… A few months I signed with a Talent Agent, started college and was majoring in Psychology, knowing it wasn’t my passion. Being exposed to the entertainment industry, being in front of a camera, watching how the behind the scenes worked, made me realize that I might have to change my major. I didn’t know what to do. My boyfriends mom, Ximena, works in the entertainment industry and knew that I was struggling figuring out what I wanted to do. Ximena then invited me to her events, TV shows and thats when I decided I needed to change my major to Broadcast and Emerging Media. This whole process wasn’t easy, I was told many times to quit, that I needed to do something else, etc. But, at that moment I knew what I wanted, and I was going to get it no matter what. A few years later, I have modeled with some incredible brands, shot great campaigns, and have worked with so many amazing people. I would say something that I am most proud of is my bachelors degree in Broadcast and Emerging Media, and my magazine covers. I really cannot wait to see what the future holds.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In South Florida, there is always something to do! If my best friend was visiting, I would take them to Beach! My boyfriend and I have a favorite beach in Surfside that is always so nice and relaxing. I also have a few favorite restaurants like Sugar Factory, and so much more. I also have a sweet tooth, so on my cheat day I would love to go to Night Owl, and a few other favorite spots. There is so much to do!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a few people who have helped me and have given me the push I needed to keep on going. My boyfriend, Samuel, is number one on that list. He has helped me so much in many different ways, he is literally my #1 fan. I’d love to thank him for everything he has done, as well as my parents for supporting me and my dreams. I also want to thank my boyfriends mom, Ximena, who has been an incredible mentor. Ximena started taking me to her events, and thats when I fell in love with the industry and everything that it entails. All of these people have been there for me and my dreams since the very beginning.
