We had the good fortune of connecting with Niaja Monay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Niaja Monay, how do you think about risk?
A risk is considered any situation with the potential exposure to harm or loss in the end. When I think about risk, I first identify what the two end results can be. I then weigh out the significance of losing one over the other to what will be more beneficial to me in the long term. There are many times when a situation will occur and you feel some form of loss, but over time that beginning loss has now benefited you and took you to places that you wouldn’t have reached if you didn’t go through that loss. The way I think about risk is from a what will place me in the path closest to a successful future thought process.

Risks have played several roles when it comes to my life and career. From being deployed, while taking classes online, at the beginning of a pandemic to becoming a certified interloctician, starting my small hair business, and working full-time in the emergency room, while in nursing school full-time; progress in life can only be made by taking risks toward our goals. If I had never taken the risk to become certified and start my own interlocking business in a new state, I would’ve never achieved my goal of owning my own small business. Not every risk that I’ve ever taken has given me the exact outcome that I wanted, but taking them created not only knowledge from the experience but great stories to converse with clients over during appointments.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others is the confidence I possess in my work. I ensure that every client that comes to my chair is more confident in themselves than before they first walked through my door. I get the most joy when my clients confide in me about their struggles with their past hair experiences or how they were having a hard time finding a stylist to their liking and finding me has given them so much relief.

Change or growth is never an easy process so I would say that getting to where I am today professionally was not an easy task, but is a path I would choose over and over again. While currently working as a loctician stylist, I work my schedule around nursing school full time and working in the emergency room full time as a technician. Time management is my best resource when it comes to keeping my head on straight and getting all of my need-to-do tasks and appointments in order. Along with time management, I overcome any challenges faced with an attitude of you’ve completed things in the past that you didn’t think you could, so this is just another necessary step in the direction of where you ultimately want to be. I have learned many lessons along the way, but the one that has stuck with me the most is that you miss 100% of the opportunities that you don’t take. Every person’s journey will be different, but it’s all about resiliency and putting yourself back out there after failed opportunities.

As cliché as it may sound I want the world to know me as being “authentically me”. Growing up I always felt that I needed to please others and achieve their vision of who I thought I “should” be, but I have grown to know that my own version of myself is better than anything anyone could want for me. I want my brand to be known for helping people to be their best selves, having an inviting environment and myself being a knowledgeable consultant when someone chooses me as their loctician. There is nothing like self-care and being able to fully relax and converse all while pampering yourself in the midst of great vibes. Coming to me as a loctician is exactly what you will get!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Depending on what things they would like to do there are so many opportunities! If it were up to me great areas to visit are Brickell, Wynwood, Ft. Lauderdale (if you have transportation).
