We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicolle Cure and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicolle, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
For me, kindness always comes first – in business and personal life. The motto I live by, “Be kind always, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about”, resonates now more than ever considering the complicated climate in the world we are living in. This modern life of ours urges us to move at a faster pace day after day, and people sometimes tend to forget that everybody is going through something; at the end of the day, we are all human, and there are human beings behind each business. I think it is crucial to keep that in mind in your daily interactions and when approaching every business venture. Experiencing an invisible health condition has opened my eyes because I have seen front row the lack of empathy from some who don’t know how to interact with people suffering from chronic pain. The symptoms that accompany hearing loss and other invisible conditions are always a challenge and sometimes force you to go slower, but also make you a stronger person overall. Living by the philosophy of kindness and compassion makes us equals and open to learning from others and understanding their backgrounds and the way of approaching life and business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My name is Nicolle Cure. I am a Colombian-American abstract painter based in Miami, Florida. After experiencing unilateral Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSHL) in 2017, I felt compelled to create a new collection of vibrant mixed-media artworks titled The Colors of Sound. In this series, I use fluid and highly pigmented acrylics, oil pastels, and other types of media to interpret sound in a visual form; the result is a collection of over 60 paintings in a small and large format. In August 2020, I released my new painting collection titled SUPERNOVA, which is the continuation of The Colors of Sound Series, a painting collection that contrasts the splendor of supernova stars’ beauty and chaos with the theme of sound and silence. Art has always played an important role in my life, I have been an artist since I was a young girl, inheriting the creativity from my parents, my dad is an artist and architect and my mother a textile designer, so needless to say, art was an integral aspect of my life while growing up in Barranquilla, Colombia. However, it wasn’t until 2017, when I experienced sudden hearing loss and vestibular (balance) problems, that my art practice pivoted in an extraordinary way. Since the early days of my hearing loss, I became an advocate of Hearing Health & Invisible Disabilities (health conditions that are not apparent to the eye such as hearing loss, fibromyalgia, MS, and many others). I always say that my art is the fuel that ignites my passion for helping others, I use art as a tool to create beauty around me and support the causes I believe in. I have been fortunate to meet and collaborate with wonderful individuals and organizations who are invested in the research of treatments for many health conditions. Art truly has the purpose of informing, engaging, inspiring, and healing.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite spots is Kabobji, a delicious Lebanese restaurant located in North Miami, they are the best! In terms of Indian cuisine, I have to say that Ghee is truly great, just make sure to visit their Kendall location. Walking down the streets of Coconut Grove is another relaxing activity for me, I love lunch or dinner at Le Bouchon Du Grove and a chai tea after at Panther Coffee. Lastly, West Palm Beach is an amazing place to spend an afternoon and grabbing lunch at the rooftop restaurant of Restoration Hardware.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My partner Felipe is a fundamental part of my success “ he is my biggest supporter and admirer, always encouraging every step I take and every decision I make. Felipe is also an artist, he is a songwriter and music producer as well as a marketing executive. We both balance our life in the arts and marketing worlds; we are constantly learning from each other’s business endeavors while nurturing and collaborating in our artistic projects. It is a great partnership in life and in business. I feel truly blessed to have him in my life.
