We had the good fortune of connecting with Njie Joinville and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Njie, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
I was able to contribute to my success by following through plans i had on a vision board, or in mind sometimes it is not easy to not easy to follow through with plans we have for ourselves , our brains love to follow a foreseeable norm or sticking to what we know. My journey of becoming a carpenter started n 2020 and now i am pushing to become a general contractor, This all started with a woodworking class i took in 2018, By 2022 i had completed my Atlantic technical school education in carpentry , The woodworking course i took in 2018 was very short lived, But it planted a seed. Originally, i was opposed to becoming a carpenter , i just wanted to put my self in a place where tools are used and taught on a professional level.. Labor or construction does not require much professional schooling. You can join a crew as an apprentice and learn as u go. Most employers are just grateful that someone is interested in working hard . But i needed to learn wood inside out , from how its grows how its cut and how its used in every phase of building. I.e. Framing, Finish to Tiling and Design. It built a picture in my head of a foreseeable future, taking my new found skill to network, find clients and even sub-contracting onto bigger jobs. I am still learning, paving my way and still growing but the decision to follow through, with a open curious heart contributed a lot, Understanding the a journey is not a race, embracing the good the bad and ugly , i have proved to myself I am here and not going anywhere , if time is what it will take, it is time I will take.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am Barb the Builder, I run Barb and The builders. I have done Kitchen and bathroom remodels. Custom work like platform stages for parties. I also do artistry custom work which consist of (2) 7 foot tall concrete Easter islands. I do framing and finish work but enjoy finish work more. I am currently not specializing in anything Particular yet, as i am gaining real life experiences but in the near future id like to specialize in modern renovations and custom container homes. i’d like to combat today’s outrageous housing costs. I would love to appeal to the young elders, and work with clients custom request like a 1 bed 1 bath 40 foot container home or a stack-able 2+ container mini mansions.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
i frequent Viator.com a lot so i would start there, then choose between activities like Yachting , Night ATV riding, parasailing or a day cruise. It is a honorary requirement to take guest to the beach , do brunches and lunches and of coarse Rise and toast on Sundays.I frequent a lot of urban night clubs , but for my guest i like to try hot spots they know or heard of, i like to get out my element . But definitely a lot clubbing eating and sightseeing is must
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
