We had the good fortune of connecting with Octavia Yearwood and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Octavia, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most important lesson I learned from my career is that I cannot and should not try to win alone. When I first began this journey I was very independent and didn’t ask for help, nor was I open to collaboration. I learned, once I healed enough to trust, that I had been stunting my growth and narrowing my overall perspective. Conversations and support really matter when it comes to sustaining your career.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a conceptual artist, motivational speaker and author, so I always have the opportunity to scale the scope of my work. I love being able to have an idea and bring people into the fold about it. I love being able to speak at a university one day, go to an exclusive Art Basel event the next, be in the press for my book one day, and dance with my student Ryan aka FLO the next. The single most powerful change that happened was my mind realizing I could actually do WHATEVER I WANTED and be sustained in all ways. It brings me joy and good health to have freedom to do what I want and be able to travel, meet new people, eat different foods, and work from the bed if I want, LOL! Life is magic and building my career taught me that.   I recently launched my life coaching business to help more people one on one, it’s been amazing! I launched it this month at 50% off because I have a goal of helping 100 people in 2021! May the magic continue!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve never done this before, but I would like to shoutout to my mother. When I see “little credit and recognition in your story” I immediately went to her. I flashed back to the beginning of life and she’s there. If my mother didn’t make the choices she did, my story would be grossly different. I am thinking now how much my resentment for her really drove me to succeed, how much me wanting to be the opposite of her prompted me make better more intentional choices from holding onto my virginity to not doing drugs in my youth. Over the years of healing I’ve learned to love her and appreciate her bringing me into the world, all while being apart from her because the relationship is unhealthy. I am forever thankful for her, and shoutout to you momma! For being my muse.
