We had the good fortune of connecting with Oscar Alci and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Oscar, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always saw myself as a leading person instead of depending on someone else’s success. I started working as a water delivery boy at the age of 13. I did not want to be paid hourly instead, I asked my boss ; not to let my tips to go into the pool. I was willing to differ myself from others and not get my business to be hurt by others action. I immediately sought ways to better the water delivery. I was paying attention to the delivery time by making a more efficient route. Taking my shoes off, keeping colorful and clean socks on all the time. It was interesting that clients started requesting my name for deliveries and i was getting more than an average tip. This was really the starting point of owning my business. It made me feel so good and valuable to believe in my ideas. I followed this thought process and own many businesses. Owning a business is like being a boxer in the ring. There is no one to blame the failure but the success is very rewarding. The proud moment of perseverance. .

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I moved to USA almost 20 years ago. I went to a community collage for a computer degree and psychology. Soon after starting the school, i had to work so; I also went to a barber’s school. I thought that the cutting hair would give me a chance of understanding people better and i could set my own time. I really had to make a living due to the special circumstances. I became the best barber in Upper East Fort Lauderdale many years in a row. I even wrote a book called “ Short Cuts “ . It is still available on Amazon. Oscar The Barber was born. Barbering let me have the inside of how other successful business people were running their operations. I have spoken from multi million dollar company ceos to apartment build janitors. I love the mix ups of people. What an insight! I fell in love with business conversations, problem solving, motivating other people! There was a missing piece. I starting hearing comments from my clients that i would be very good in real estate business. I learned that more then a few people telling you something, listen to it. An outsider will have an objective and a fresh eye. I jumped into it. I got my real estate associate license and staring for a medium size firm. It was a magical. Consulting people with the biggest purchase of their lives was something very special. I also loved the challenge, hustle, competition and the legal part of the business. I always loved learning and researching. I knew from the first date that real estate will be my main venture. I could not wait to get my brokers license to open my firm but i had to wait due to licensing regulations. Today, I own Ares Luxury Properties. It is a boutique firm with a few agents.I take pride in every transaction with care. I specialize on personal service and intimacy with our clients, I learned as an entrepreneur that people will catch fake very quickly. I pride myself for being honest and straight forward. “People will talk business with people they like but, people will only do business with people they trust.” Gaining trust from people will only come from honest relationships. I value my and my clients time tremendously. I recently opened my first office space despite the Covid-19. I still have dreams and goals to achieve. Persistency will overcome fear and show results. I still research and learn something about my businesses every morning for at least an hour. Times are moving so fast so, the only way to stay in the race; you have to keep hydrate yourself. Often, people ask me why I added the luxury part to my real estate, they are curious about if i do rentals or very affordable homes. My answer is always “ a matchstick can a luxury…”

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am very connected with Fort Lauderdale.I know most of the restaurant owners personally. Greek Island Taverna, Blue Moon Fish Company, Case De Angelo, Capital Grill are my favorite fine dining places. Lauderdale By-The-Sea offers a great square to hang out for locals and visitors. Aruba Beach Cafe is super popular place on the beach. Iconic Downtown Las Olas area is a must stop for entertaining. For a nice beach day, Park & Ocean is cool place to chill. It is located in the Birch State Park so, there are many activities available as well.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I grew up in Istanbul, Turkey. Growing up with a single mother was hard. My mom had to work day and night to be able to send me a better school. She did not want me to see myself a less of a person due to not having a father around and living on a poverty line. I remember us carrying gasoline in 25 liter jugs from a 5 mile away gas station in the middle of a brutal winter. We did not know anyone with a car and could not afford the taxi. The taxi service would not accept the gasoline jugs anyways due to the smell. There was such a determination in my mom’s actions to better ourselves all the time. The gasoline fire place was a better choice for us because; she could set it up the night before for tomorrow. I would spent most of the evenings alone waiting for her to come home. I was her reason to exist! She even sold her wedding ring, the only valuable jewelry she had so; I could be dressed up nice to attend a children’s tv show. She had an open heart surgery, she was hospitalized for depression, She beat the pancreatic cancer and still fighting it everyday with the commitment of not giving up. Giving up is not even an option! She is my hero! She is the reason who i am today. I live in USA in a nice community and become a successful person because of her. I learned the biggest lesson from her, the perseverance plus commitment will create success. Just stick to these principles and have faith. I did run into amazing role models who chiseled my character. Wayne Grimm, a dear friend more like a dad! He thought me accountability and self respect. Wayne still checks on me regularly. He and Maybin moved to N. Carolina for more quite life style. Steve Kalafer, a dear friend and a business mentor. He is one of the first people who believed in me with my real estate business by giving me a deal knowing i was just starting my career. Steve owns multiple multi million companies and definitely has great talent around him but he is a true winner. He is a guy who is on top reaching down to pull others like me to his level. Frank Rella, a dear friend and inspiration mentor. Frank is great business person who built a nice portfolio by himself. His money has been on me without a doubt from the first day i met him. He gave me a chance to open one of my businesses when things were very tough financially. He gave me a store key with a handshake. I learned how to help someone with good faith in heart. I feel very fortunate to meet many other amazing people in life. I thank them all.
