We had the good fortune of connecting with Pat Kanji and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pat, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
As a kid I used to be very into athletics and all of a sudden in highschool my genetics caught up to me. In my teens and I started having issues with my Ehlers Danlos Syndrome
Chronic pain dislocating joints from time to time made it easy for me to gravitate towards my guitar in my room. I also was getting in trouble a lot and the only things I had to entertain myself with was a guitar and endless amounts of cd’s I bought form a record store down the street. I had an epiphany when one day I picked my guitar up it had three string on it the top three, I sat down and learned come as you are by nirvana on YouTube with only those three strings and I said to myself out loud wow I can actually do this it made me feel intelligent creative and just comfortable in my own skin at a time when I really needed it..
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So as a musician and producer I’ve always prided myself on playing real instruments and allowing that to help with the base of any song I write or produce. With that being said When I started producing I didn’t use a computer I had a loop pedal kinda like what Ed Sheeran does at his live shows but with a Casio piano a guitar and bass. I would record one section of a song and move to the next instrument unplugging and plugging everything back in until I had a full loop. And I garnered a lot of respect from peers who were making songs on computers and I was making bangers ona loop pedal. My authenticity lies in the raw god given talent that I have playing instruments I honestly can’t tell you how blessed I feel to have this super power. Now that I know how to produce on a computer and have been for years my creativity is boundless and that makes it so fun. It was never easy tho from hosting house shows between all that and moving to and from portland in one year I found that the only common denominator is me. So I’ve been happy with finding things on my own not asking people for one thing or another jus having the will to guide myself to what I want and not what others are doing. I don’t even use social media so I make it hard on myself unfortunately but i love this music stuff so much to stop now I owe to the people that have taught me things to get me where I am now.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Probably have a early morning coffe and breakfast at valentines w/ vanilla corn’ cappuccino and their sausage breakfast sandwich. After that hit the links at bellair golf park very modest local golf course not pricey good conditions and a good place to hang with the boys. After that grab some delicious shrimp tacos from beach house gotta get their frozen lemonades too. N to wrap it up get all dressed up and head to tarbells for one of the nicest dinners you’ll ever have
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Well I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Nikki Hayes she put me in contact with you guys and she’s one of the only people in my life rn that is helping me carry out my dreams as a musician and producer.
