We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrick Stout and Asa Palmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patrick & Asa, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking is something that I partake in daily as a coach, fighter, and business owner. Risk builds character in life and helps us understand who we are as individuals. A life long love of comics, mangas and athletics and the risk associated with each, has also given me a deeper understanding of myself. This understanding of self and character was a big help in the creation of Sentinel 6. The physical and mental freedom to constantly create is in big part thanks to my willingness to step into the void, take a risk and see it through! -Patrick
I like risk because it shows who a person is when faced with a choice. Many people are risk-averse but as creatives you often have to be bold in your art or else you will live with regret. One of the biggest risks we took was launching our crowdfunding campaign during the heart of Covid. We had doubts but ultimately, we decided to believe in ourselves. “We created Sentinel 6!”, could’ve easily been “I wish we created Sentinel 6”, if we decided to not take that risk.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Sentinel 6 is an Afro-futuristic story that takes place on a post apocalyptic Earth 400 years into the future. Six black student athletes answer the call to become Earth’s new protectors, The Sentinel Six.
Our journey started five years ago, reminiscing over the great cartoons that resonated with us. Naturally, we gravitated to the ones that showed people who look like us. Static Shock was a main one since there were a limited few. We decided we wanted to right that wrong and create more representation for our people. The process has not been easy but with hard work, dedication and perseverance, you can achieve anything.
A huge thing that propels us forward is knowing that there are fans who see themselves in our characters. Every time that happens, we see our dream coming true over and over. Through the obstacles, we learned how powerful representation is because it’s needed in our communities.
We want to inspire black and brown kids around the world to have imaginative freedom. This imaginative freedom will then empower these kids to pursue/create whatever their mind and heart desires.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whether its food, galleries, street art, or clubs Wynwood is a great time. Brick, Lagniappe and Coyo are always classic favorites, but Morgan’s is incredible for brunch as well. South Beach is iconic, but for a quieter beach go a little further to North Beach and you’ll love it too! Lastly if you’re in Miami and looking for some great eats, one spot you have to try is: Caña Brava. Get the steak dinner and thank us later!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout my girlfriend, my friends and family and Toonami -Pat
I’d like to shout out all of my friends and family who supplied immense support along the way. Also, shout out to the creators of the Static Shock for inspiring the kid in me.
