We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrick Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patrick, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
There were three MAIN reasons/things that happened that made me realize I need to start my own business & work for myself..
First, for some context, before starting my own business, I worked for a small Financial Planning company (yes, completely different from my current business/passion in the fitness space).
There were three main things that stuck out to me:
1) Every day when I was driving into work, I was extremely anxious. You know how people get the “Sunday Scaries” about going back to work on Monday? I had the every day scaries. I was worried about potential mistakes I made, emails I didn’t send, what my bosses would say. I knew I needed to get out of that situation in some way. I knew that if I just answered to myself & the responsibility for any failures/successes was on me (without anyone telling me what I did wrong), I would be A LOT more happy.
2) One random afternoon, while I was working at my previous job, sitting in my shared office in Columbus, Ohio & all of the sudden felt trapped. I had been working the job for about 7 months. But I sat there & thought to myself: “There’s NO chance I’m going to be sitting in this same office for 10-15-20 years. I need to go explore & see what’s out there.”
I’ve since moved to Los Angeles & now Fort Lauderdale. I intend on traveling/living in other cities & countries in the future as well.
I knew that the only way I would be able to live my life by my own design would be to start my own business.
3) I knew that I was willing to do whatever it took to make my business succeed. If that meant going & getting a bartending job orrr Ubering late at nights. I would do whatever was necessary to stay afloat until I built my business. I had done it at other points in life to make ends meet. If push came to shove, I knew I could make ends meet along the way until I started to gain traction with my business.
Overall, we all pick our challenges & pain in life. When I was working for someone, I dealt with the pain of being anxious, stuck, and not in control. With entrepreneurship, you deal with the challenges of staying afloat & pushing yourself when it gets tough, making all of the decisions, learning from the “losses”.
What should our readers know about your business?
I teach & help people how to lose fat, build muscle, look & feel their best WITHOUT giving up their favorite foods/drinks. When it comes to losing weight & getting in shape, most people think that they need to be 1000% perfect with their diet (eating only chicken & broccoli, having no carbs) and getting in 7 days of workouts (with at least 45 minutes of cardio) every day. Andddd that’s just not the case.
I show & empower people to travel, go out, enjoy tasty foods, and still make progress. The goal is to make fitness way less overwhelming & less restrictive. And by doing so, people often times make a lot more progress (short & long term).
Additionally, my business is entirely online & remote. I had it structured like this from the start so that I could work with people anywhere in the country/world. Additionally, it gives both me & my clients flexibility. Anddd, most importantly, I think it gives people the autonomy/power to learn how to make fitness progress on their own (I’m there to talk to/give them the goals/plan BUT they are the ones going & executing on that).
I always had a passion for fitness & I also LOVE food & traveling. However, I never saw anyone in the fitness space talking about to get in shape while enjoying life. It was always an “all or nothing” approach. However, I had made progress with my fitness goals while living my best life. SO, I figured that if I started talking about that, other people would want to know how to actually do it.
Once I had that idea & the structure in place, I started posting on social media as much helpful information as possible. For about a year & a half, I posted every single day on Instagram. My business grew a little bit (enough to stay afloat).
However, I was always looking for new ways to grow my platform, brand, and business. In Fall of 2019, I heard Gary Vee talking about how Tik Tok was the next big social media platform to build your brand. I immediately jumped on & started making fitness content (one of the first fitness influencers on the platform). From there, my business exploded. I quadrupled my business in about a year.
Focus on the day to day actions, be open to making changes (especially if your day to day actions aren’t bringing the results you want), and always be looking for new opportunities!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I currently live in Fort Lauderdale but I LOVE Miami as well. I’ll give some suggestions for both!
Fort Lauderdale:
– Noodles Panini is a lower key Italian restaurant on Las Olas that has AMAZING food. Arguably best around.
– Cafe Martorano is THE COOLEST place I’ve been. Amazing Italian food & the owner DJs while you’re eating (Nice mix of music too – 90’s Hip Hop, early 2000’s classics, throwbacks). It’s a party while you eat – amazing.
– Elbo Room: Right on the beach. Been around forever. It’s has a little bit of a college frat party feel in there BUT amazing people watching, beautiful views, and a good time for sure!
Miami:
– The mall in Brickell is the most beautiful, clean place I’ve ever been lol. Every time I go there (and an restaurant there), it just makes me feel good. Walk around, shop, have some food. It’s niiiice.
– Miami Mojito Company in Wynwood. Inexpensive & TASTY drinks.
– A Miami staple but the FountainBleu is a must In my opinion.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
One of my best friends, Austin Rutherford. I met him when I was 14 years old. He consistently pushes himself to be the best version of him in all aspects of life. Being around him every day (almost every day for the last 13-14 years), has pushed me to be the best version of myself & never stop pushing. He’s been running his own business since he was 20 years old. He pushed to quit my job & start my own business. I’m forever grateful to our paths crossed & for our friendship to be as strong now as it’s ever been.
