We had the good fortune of connecting with Paulina and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paulina, why did you pursue a creative career?
I realized I’m not happy if I’m not working on my craft. If I’m not dissecting a character or writing a song, I don’t feel fulfilled. I realized it’s my purpose in life. I remember listening to interviews about Michael Jackson always being in the studio. I heard this one story about him calling up his producer when inspiration hit and it didn’t matter that it was deep into the night. He would tell his producer that he needed to work on that song right then and there. His producer asked if it could wait until the next day, but Michael said no. He said that if he didn’t go and finish making the song, someone else would. I cherish the moments where it feels like a song, a melody, an idea chooses me. I feel like I have a duty to bring to life the art that flows through me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One of the things I’m most proud of is that I decided to take the plunge and start releasing my music without waiting for it to be “perfect”. Nothing is ever going to be perfect and realizing that was very liberating. I decided to meet myself where I’m at and make the music that feels right to the Paulina of this time and space. And I encourage everyone to do the same. A lot of beautiful opportunities have come my way since that realization and I am so thankful. For example, I had the opportunity to attend the Billboard Latin Music Week in Miami, and was subsequently named an emerging artist on Billboard’s radar. A lot of great things happen when you put yourself out there and choose to believe in yourself. It’s not easy, but it is so so worth it.
It’s crazy to think my professional music career started just this year. The road here was most definitely not easy, it started many many years ago and my biggest battle was with myself, but a lot of therapy and healing later, here I am.
I have 2 singles out, Dejarlo ir & Sin rumbo, both of which are doing really great on streaming platforms. I released my first music video for my first single, Dejarlo ir, with Monovisión, a group of amazing puerto rican filmmakers. And, it was also published as a recommended song to add to your playlist by Billboard. I am currently working on my first EP, Instantes, that is to be released early next year. I hope you can follow along on Instagram and Spotify so you don’t miss my next release and other very cool surprises! In the mean time, you can stream my latest single, Sin rumbo <3
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When friends visit Puerto Rico, I always love to take them to the classic tourist spots and then some hidden gems. I love a stroll in Viejo San Juan: seeing the beautiful architecture and stopping by El Morro and sitting on the grass while enjoying a nice ice cream from local vendors. Then, I would take them to Teatro en 15, which is a new theater concept of micro plays that last 15 minutes. And, to end the night we would go dancing and drinking at La Factoría. The rest of the week would be composed of beach days, hiking in El Yunque and eating delicious food at local restaurants.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my best friend, my rock, Antoinette Luna. They are an exceptional artist and are one of the best people you will ever meet. They are always there to help, to lend a hand, to educate. I am so thankful we grew together and have harnessed such a beautiful friendship through the years. Not only are they the best best friend you could ask for in the personal aspects, but they go out of their way to support me in my career as well. Luna accompanies me to my interviews, makes sure to tell the interviewer all the things I forgot to say; they proofread my emails, tell everyone in the room I’m an artist and where they can stream my songs. Luna is quite literally my number one fan. Thank you for being you, Luna.
