We had the good fortune of connecting with Racquel Henry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Racquel, what are you inspired by?
Hallmark movies. I’m serious! Hallmark movies inspired me to believe in love again and to write romance. I’m also inspired by life. If you pay attention enough, you’ll notice that inspiration is everywhere. Sometimes I’m inspired by a person, a sentence, or a small moment while getting a coffee. I find a lot of inspiration in my family and friends. There is so much beauty around us if we just take a second to slow down and notice it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I write contemporary romance and contemporary YA primarily, though I dabble in other genres and categories. There’s just something about a love story that warms my heart and uplifts me. I used to ghostwrite romance for years until about 2018. I had also been a loyal Hallmark Channel fan and had the idea that I’d love to write a romance that made others feel the same way I feel when I watch a Hallmark movie. That was when I decided to write romance under my own name. I’m a hybrid author, which means I live in both the traditional publishing and independent publishing worlds. Each publishing path has its challenges. I love writing stories, though, so I try to remind myself of that when things get challenging. I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that I need to stay true to myself as a writer. As long as I’m doing that, there’s no losing. This way of thinking is also what keeps me going.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite places to eat and hang out is called East End Market. It’s this cool spot with a courtyard that has a few local vendors, including places to eat. I love the fries from Winter Park Biscuit Co. and the green smoothie from Skyebird Juice Bar. There’s also a lovely jewelry store called Carla Poma Jewelry. I’d also recommend my favorite gift shops, which are Miscellaneous Market in Ivanhoe Village and Good Crowd in College Park. I also really love eating at Kyoto Sushi & Grill and KiKo Japanese Cuisine (for vegan sushi).

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shout out my sister, Natalie Henry-Charles! She owns a stationery brand called Pretty Peacock Paperie and is an outstanding mother and wife! I love the way she balances her personal life with her business life. She’s been able to grow her company over the years and is absolutely amazing!
